Carnetix P2140, No solder Power button, Wake on Link?

I'm so close to being done, only thing left is to figure out how to bring my laptop, an Acer Aspire 3050, out of standby.

I've set windows to go into standy when it no longer gets power from the P2140 or the wallwart, and I've gotten it to come back out of standby by putting a double-pole switch closing the wires of a lan cable, specifically, 1-3 and 2-6 SEPARATELY. Can't cross all four together, it does nothing. =\

The switch works great, pops out of standby in under 5 secs, or short enough that I'm pleased with it. And I only need to flip it on for a second and the laptop wakes up (very pleased with that).

My question is, can I use the white and green ACPI wires from the carnetix to trip low current relay (60ma) as the 'switch' and automate the wake sequence?

Has anyone done this? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and should use the blue DELAYON somehow?

I've searched for relays, carnetix, wake on link, etc and not really found an answer. And no, I really don't want to solder to my power button when this may work just as well.

Any help is appreciated.

OK. I know it CAN be done from the number of Wake on Link/Lan threads I've found, but I'm hoping to find someone who has actually done it, and how.

I'm figuring I could also use a Pulse Relay (momentary relay) off the power supply itself, but again I'm hoping to find someone who did it and the what's and how's behind it.

I believe that the 2140 already has a built in relay for the ACPI signal that is used for the Xenarc systems, it is activated by changing a jumper on the pcb.

I an not 100 percent sure but I thing it connects to ground momentarilly. This should work perfectly for your case. You can find out exactly what it does ether by using a multimeter or if you are not very hands on just ask around in the carnetix site and forum. The guys there are very helpful.

I hope that helps! You are lucky that your laptop does wake-up using this trick. many systems don't have that function.

So, I decided to use a network switch I had laying around to manage my rebooting.

Basically, by using a powered network switch, I'm able to have my Acer Aspire laptop resume from standby, hibernation, or even cold boot by going into the device properties for my network card and setting the proper box to allow the network card to bring it out of standby/hibernation.
I have an old Dlink switch I had in the junk drawer, connected a regular network cable between it and the laptop, gave it some juice off the Carnetix 2140, and blammo, instant resume from standby.

CURIOUSLY ENOUGH, I can also cold boot my laptop this way. Dunno why, but I'm happy it can.

Final problem to solve: I can go into standby from RoadRunner and resume without ANY issues, but if I let windows or the Carnetix power supply do the standby my Audigy 2 ZS ntoebook audio goes to pot - all kinds of popping, crackling, and general noise. A reboot takes care of it and returns the audio to normal, so as long as I remember to use the software to do the standby I'm fine.

Now to pack up all the gear and actually mount it in the car. Ungh. Out of the lab and into the field.

The switch in question: Dlink 5Port Switch

There's no on/off switch on it, so I've got 7.5v 1amp going to it from the carnetix to turn it on. Works real sweet, and no internal mods (soldering, jumpering) done to ANYTHING. YAY.

well done m8, it seems you have sussed it out :-)..

I dont understand what the difference is between asking rr to do it or getting the pc to auto hibernate/standby.. maybe guino can shed some light on it.. I dont think its a big problem and could be easy rectified by some simple code I guess.. let me know if you dont sort it and I will have a go at writing something that when it rec's the hibernation/standby command from the pc it then sends the command to rr to do the action.. this might fix your problem

Gonna take some more 'troubleshooting' to find that last little hiccup. I've been searching around for better Power Management software, but so far coming up short.

Thanks for the offer, I've always simply shut-down my machines in the past so this Standby/Hibernate thing is still pretty new to me. Love the fact it snaps out of Standby in like 3 secs, tho. Gotta like a comp that responds like an appliance. =)

I've added an instant 'Standby' button to all my usual Roadrunner skins, so now I've got a 'Shut down' procedure for the carputer, sucks to add a manual step to the process, but it works!

Still gonna work on the troubleshooting, but at least now it's 99% operable. My dlink radio card like to crash the system for some reason. Oh, well. There's always line in from car radio or XM tuner, eh? Hopefully I'll be doing a Project Complete post come sunday afternoon/night. Heh.

I've followed your example (different net. switch though) and I am still only able to come out of standby. It won't bring it out of hibernation or boot it up. Is there another setting for my NIC card that I have to tweak? I have all "WakeOn..." options enabled, and "Allow this device to wake..." under Power Management.

Yeah, the settings are all pretty much all right there in the device manager listing... If you can get it out of standby but not hibernation your Mobo/lan card may not support it.

I'd consider hitting the manufacturer's site for updated drivers, or a mobo bios update. I was REALLY surprised to see it cold boot from the lan card. Totally unexpected bonus. Hibernate I wasn't so surprised.

I can seem to get a "standby" button in RR to shutdown. I would like for RR to go to "standby". But all I can get is the hibernate, exit, close. etc... buttons.
How can I get a standby button in RR?
Any help would be appreciated.

Edit your shut down screen and where it says "HIBERNATE" change it to read "STANDBY". The button will look the same, but when you press hibernate in RR it should go into standby.

Granted, I'm still REALLY NEW to editing skins, so if I mess something up, no yellin', k?
