Hi,

Just purchased an M2 ATX as my Opus 150w of 4 years died on me last week!

Now this is the scenario i've got:

- M2-ATX hooked up to a bench DC unit outputting 13.8 v
- The molex out of the M2 is connected to a splitter
- One goes to a laptop hardrive which only uses the 5v rail and one ground
- The other molex goes to my DW5200 2 din screen (12v rail and one ground)

If I do the following:

Have both the hardrive and monitor connected:
Power up - CPU fan kicks in, computer LED's on - no POST from computer

Disconnect the monitor:
Power up - computer POST's and starts normally

Disconnect the laptop hardrive
Power up - Monitor switches on and is fully functional


I mean WTF? My amp reading on the bench DC is never more than 5amps with both connected.

According to the manual the M2 should be able to take 8a on the 12v alone - but the only device that uses the 12v rail is the monitor. The laptop drive only uses the 5v rail.

I have verified all outputs are reading the right voltages.

What on earth is the matter?

Quick update on this:

I have since swapped out the M2 ATX with another DC power supply. It does the same thing!

However, this time what I did was connect up the laptop drive and boot - into windows okay. Now if i connect the 12v line and ground of the DW2500 to the molex the screen goes off - if I then remove the connections the PC begins to POST and then boot again.

So it sounds like there is something to do with the screen that is causing intially the computer to POST and if connected once the computer is booted cause it to reset.

This is bloody weird!

Is the psu powering anything from usb, etc? Or is it just the hdd, monitor and mobo?

Something sounds wrong with the Screen. Check your wiring, make sure you have everything wired correctly.

Also, I would connect the screen directly to your Power Supply, and check how much amperage it is drawing. You MIGHT have a large draw because of a small short that isn't blowing the fuse, but pullng to much power from the PS, or doing something that a switching power supply just doesn't like.

I think it is a sae bet that IT IS NOT THE M2. I just mention that, because there is a trend on this board to malign and beat the M2 up, when most of the time, it is NOT the m2s fault. I think a more proper title for your thread would have been

"Very Wierd Problem" or "Computer won't boot" etc...

@Thrasher - I have no other devices connected via USB. My setup is:

Via M10000 mobo
Creative Audigy 2 PCI sound card
40gb 2.5" HD

I have connected the screen to the PS and never goes above 3a. I can verify that I am connecting the wires to the correct outputs on the molex (BATT cable -> yellow wire in molex, GRND cable -> black wire in molex). I can connect the screen via the ISO loom in the car and works fine, but I need this screen on a regulated 12v line.

Any other suggestions?

Actually, 3 amps seems high. I can't find any info about your screen, have any links.

UPDATE:

I have now purchased a Carnetix P2140 which is a dedicated supply for the screen - and it works!

So it looks like it was an current issue rather than the M2 specifically.
