M2-ATX: When voltage gets too low, is it a hard shut off?

This has happened a few times and I wanted to see what everyone thought:

Yesterday when I started up the car, my computer did not turn on in 5 seconds like it normally does. After ~60 seconds it turn on and music was playing fine. About a minute later I came to a stoplight and the entire computer + screen + amp completely shut off. Specifically, the screen went turned off (it did not turn black), I could hear the motherboard fan stop and the 3.5" HD turn off and a loud thump was heard through the speakers. After this occurred, I disconnected the M2-ATX ignition line so that the computer would not turn on should everything recover.

Today, I connected the ignition wire back in and started the car. This time, the computer turned on within 5 sec as normal and everything was running fine ~15 min. I stopped by the grocery store and was waiting with the car ignition still turned on. After being parked for ~5 min, the same exact thing happened as previously described. This time, I did not disconnect the ignition wire and just waited. After ~60 sec the computer started back up but it was a cold boot (WinXP logo, WinXP login, etc). I have WinXP set up to hibernate and it did not come out of hibernation. I started playing music again and then drove him. The trip home was free of any problems.

So that's my description of what happened. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to provide all the details. I'm thinking that the battery voltage got too low and M2-ATX kicked in and shut everything down. However I've never experienced this before so maybe something else is going on?

What do you guys think?

Thanks.

-Matt
