We have no way of knowing what happened, to be honest.
If you connected everything correctly and all equipment is good, then the PSU was not the source of the motherboard frying like that.
My first thought is a short somewhere, but without seeing your setup, there's no way of knowing for certain.

hmm... i connected the red wire to the battery and ground the black wire and hooked up the yelllow wire as remote wire to my ignition. then connected the 20 pin to a 24 pin harness and connected that to the mobo. did it sound like i did everything correctly?

Man I haven't hear that for a long long time. According to the process, you did everything correct. I know you didn't mention about the fuse, but I'm sure you do have one.
Something drop in the mobo? You know when you cut the wire, those little wire can drop in there and cause a short circuit.
Without connect to the mobo, short pin 13 and pin 14 on the ATX cable (20 pin) and check for voltage on that 20 pin. Make sure you have the pin out diagram to compare to make sure if pin 1 is actually pin 1 and not pin 2. I mean just double check for cross pin on the connector by error or mistake from manufactures, ...
