Hi,

I am trying to troubleshoot a problem with my machine. Specifically, it fails to start. Well, more exactly -- the machine will power up for about 15 - 20 seconds and then power off. In my car this cycle continued over and over again. On the bench, after powering down it stayed down.

Troubleshooting steps:
1. While in car I turned off all power to the computer and then reapplied it (no change -- after several attempts)

2. took out of car and power computer via a ATX power supply through the OPUS. Power's on and then off (stays off)

3. powered motherboard directly from my ATX power supply -- same results as #2

4. Sent motherboard back to company as an RMA. Company verified that nothing was wrong with the motherboard. Included a 15hour Burn In Test...

5. Got board back, plugged in as in #3 with same results as #2....

6. Took out memory module and again tried #3 (same results as #2)

Any Suggestions? I keep my system specs updated on mp3car, so just see the link under my name for them...

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you get an image on your monitor?
Do you get the boot-ok beep from your bios?
I had the same experience when building my car-pc, but for me it was just the powersupply that was not strong enough for my configuration.
If nothing of the above points help you solve it, than i'm afraid i have bad news.
I have the feeling that it will be your cpu that's damaged.

I hope for you that i'm wrong.

Ordered a new DC-DC adapter, hope it helps....

Have you tried to start the car and than start up the cpc, it sounds like the battery isn’t giving enough power. So when the powersupply starts it takes away power and the current of the battery falls. When it hits the safety, it will turn of the mobo, thus giving the battery the change the recuperate, than there is enough power for the powersupply and it switches the mobo back on, etc...

Do you have a chance of testing your config with another cpu?

If your motherboard is tested, you can be sure that it's ok.
If you use your atx-supply in your pc, you can be sure that ok as well.

you removed the memory, no error-beep's?
I'm thinking CPU

Unfortunetly, I don't own another cpu of that type...

The ATX power supply is a spare one, so I haven't been using it in any other system.
Removing the memory resulted in the same problem (no beeps) -- I had expected it to at least stay powered....

Try another supply.
If the ATX is a spare one, you have no idea if its providing enough power. Use the one youre using in your normal computer and see what happens. If you're not getting the beeps, it means that either (like they said) youre not getting enough power OR your cpu is fried. More than likely youre not getting enough power since cpus dont just fry like theyre made out to...

The CPU will draw less than 65W, any old power supply even uATX supplies will power the whole thing no problem. Obviously check that the PSU is ok, but my money is on the cpu.

What is the serial number of your CPU? The whole Socket M, Socket P, Socket 478/479 thing for these core duo, core 2 duo, core solo chips is a nightmare. You could have an incompatible cpu without knowing it. If you have a socket P chip and it is supposed to be a socket M type thing. Since your specs list it as a solo/duo then you are supposed to have a Socket M. And with these new Intel chips not all with the same model number are the same cpu socket.

I have ordered a new PSU, hopefully I will get it today (crosses fingers) -- will report back findings....

You realize "Core Duo" and "Core 2 Duo" are completey different beasts.

Your motherboard does not support Core 2 Duo.

Although the specs listed on mp3car state only "core duo" the instruction manual for the board states:

MB899
Intel ® CoreTM 2 Duo/
CoreTM Duo/ Solo 945GM
Mini-ITX Motherboard

Also given I have used this system for over 6 months, I don't think my issue is one of incompatibility (at least I hope not).

although cpu's have some protect against overcurrent, it's really not that great. Thermal protection is ok for most cpu's.
My bet is still the cpu.
