Compaq handheld pc power supply

Hi guys

I have an old compaq handheld computer i bought second hand on a recent trip overseas. trouble is, it ran at 120v and i misread the power supply. When i got home (i live in australia) i plugged it into the wall (240v) and started to get up to plug the other end into the Pocket PC.

4 seconds later i heard a puff and smelt some very strange cmoke. i'm just glad it wasn't plugged into the handheld.

anyway, i now have it in my car playing MP3s for me (from a 1GB compact flash card) and running my custom software i wrote. problem is i have to replace it's built-in batteries every week, and 4 AAAs cost a lot here.

I need to know what i would use to create a DC-DC power supply

any help appreciated.

--edit--
the old power supply output at 5V DC 1.6Amps

i have a 5v 1amp 78L05 voltage regulator, but that's not enough. i need 1.6amps. might i be able to wire two of these together or something to provide 2 amps?

You can do it, but it would be better to buy a regulator with a higher rated output

Here is one part that should work

NTE1934x

6-15v Input
5V, 2A output

Any electronics store should be able to order the part (or an equivelant). Just ask. BTW, Radio Shack does not count as an electronics store.
