my carputer project

ok, so im puting a computer in my car, what else is new?

it seems to me that a good power source is going to be the most difficult part of the project. looking at my options, it seems a power inverter is the best sollution for me. i had intended to use a power inverter from the begining of my project but that didnt stop me from looking into dc-dc sollutions. unfortunatly there doesnt seem to be any dc-dc solutions that i am willing to trust as far as reliability and failure modes go. since my monitor and xbox will need ac and i can get a high quality atx ps really cheap if it runs on ac, i decided an inverter would be the way to go.

now, some people seem to have issues with the efficiency of inverters, my oppinion is that pure sine wave inverts arent that bad esp if you dont stress them too hard. anyone care to argue this?

i guess the fun part starts here. i want my computer to have a reserve power source to keep my car battery from getting drained. also, id really like the inverter to keep going while my engine is cranking. this shouldnt be too hard, an extra battery and a schottky diode should be all i need. now where too hook it up: the car battery terminals, or the 12v accessory line? im leaning towards the 12v accessory line because that way i wont have to find out how well the inverter deals with a possible 200v spike on its input that can occour while cranking (depending on the vehicle and other conditions). my main concern about this would be, can the 12v accessory provide enough current to power a 300W continuous inverter. any oppinions on this?

Get a second battery and wire it in using an isolator,, search the forums for "isolator" and "tank circuit" for more info

thanks for your input. an isolator appears to be what im looking for. i suppose that would limit the voltage range on the inverter's inputs to between Vbat and Valt minus the voltage drop over the isolator? i wouldnt have to worry about anything the starter does, or batteries blowing up, right?
