Opus DC-DC 90W 150W Pricing Dimensions Info

It's way too hard to find actual info on the Opus DC-DC Power Supplies (pricing, dimensions, etc.) around here. Searches pull up several posts, but most people are just told to talk to Kris. I'm sure he's great and all, but why bug him with simple stuff? Let's compile some data in this thread and make it sticky.

Other tidbits
----
  • There are several ways to hook an Opus up to AC power (for testing indoors, moving between car and house, etc). One is to buy a standard ATX power supply and wire the output of the 12V rail to the input of the Opus. Another is to buy a simpler AC-DC power supply (usually intended for ham radio equipment) that supplies the current (A) and voltage (V) listed in max power consumption above.
  • Epia M boards have slightly different power requirements (why? timing?). Make sure to specify that you want a power supply compatible with them.
  • There appears to have been a bad batch of these power supplies that have fried the motherboards of several people. Resolution pending.

I've marked things I don't know yet in red. If you can clear any of this up or correct anything that's wrong...post!

Does the enclosed model have a cooling fan?

I recomend staying away from the Opus (90W at least) until the current motherboard-frying issues have been resolved. Way too many motherboards have been turned into doorstops by Opus 90W units for such a low volume product - your chances of getting a bad one are very good!

The 150W enclosed model does have a cooling fan. I have no idea about the 90W... I think it probably would also.

If you get the 150W and have an EPIA M series board, you have to tell him so that he can perform some modification so that it will work.. I don't know what the modification does, but whatever it was, it works great for me!

If this is going to a sticky thread, it's also worth noting that the max consumption of the 150W opus is 13.5A @ 12V, so if you want to power it off of AC (Mains), you'll need a pretty hefty power supply. I got a 12V 15A supply on ebay for about $20.

thanks gork
Ah, you have a EPIA M in the C137? Didn't see that mentioned elsewhere. I've checked out all of your pics, do you have any inside shots of the PC, particularly the OPUS mounting? (to keep on topic)

Anyone know what he's doing to the 150W model for EPIA M boards?

Here is the enclosed model OPUS 150W mounted in the Travala C137 case. I removed the drive/psu "tray" under the PCI card area and then dremmeled the CompactFlash reader mount off of the case so the PSU would sit farther forward. I moved the OPUS power connector to the other opening on the PSU (you'll see what I mean about this if you put your OPUS into the same case)

Gork:

One more, if you don't mind. (sorry, that's probably a lie) I'm trying to fiugre out if I can use both PCI slots and a 3.5" drive, which I know is a problem for the C137.

Is there enough clearance above mobo to mount a 3.5" hard drive (rotated 90 degrees to the CD tray) to the bottom of the CD tray. It looks like the HD would only overlap the IDE connectors (maybe ram too) of the mobo.

Thanks againg for all the help, and to repeat what others have said. Excellent job on the M3.

No you can't use both PCI slots and a 3.5" drive.

I have my 2.5" drive in the location you specified and it is a tight fit. You might be able to get a 3.5" drive there, but you'd have to completely replace the CDROM tray with some custom bracket as you'd need all the vertical space you'd get both above and below the position of the tray... Maybe you could just remove the tray and mount your HDD to the top of the case.. Opening/closing the case would sure suck after that though

I've sent an email last week and another one today, but haven't received an answer yet... Hope that I can order a 150W for my Epia M soon. I would like to start building in a few weeks and shipment to Europe will probably take 1-2 weeks. But I'll show some patience now
