how long for shutdown?

Im designing a shutdown controller (hopefully that everyone could use).

Whats the longest time you experienced for your pc to shutdown?

My intensions are to address problems when the OS/applications hang up during shutdown to ensure the pc is off after {your answer here} minutes.

If possible, make it adjustable via trimpot or jumper.
Some people what it like a minutes after the key is off (press the power button).
Some may need like 10-15 minutes just for quick stop of re-fuel.
Some may want 30min to an hour.
Personally, I want 15 min.

At the moment im concerned with after you hit the power button, NOT after you turn the car off. It shouldnt take 10 or 15 minutes for your pc to shut down, if so this "backup kill switch" will kill the power to the pc. Im thinking more like 1 or 2 minutes at max. Remember this is if an application hangs up after you pushed the power button.

1 mins is about right for a typical shutdown time. So ill say stick in 2 mins delay before cutting power off completely just to be safe

Whats your controller gonna be based on? logic/delays? PIC?

I based mine on PIC, Im still working on it...I didnt realised how much thinking is involved in making a good controller.

I think im gonna use logic/delays. I would like to use a PIC but thats gonna take a lil longer and more money since I have to learn how to program it. Eventually i will use a PIC once my skills are a lil stronger. Either way i go im gonna have to complete a hi level diagram of the system. I agree it is alot of thinking involved for something that seemed so simple. I have set some goals for myself so i can make some progress otherwise ill be thinking about it forever tryin to make it perfect before i can test.
