opus powersupply question (newb)

what wires do you need to run to the opus for it to function porprly

im planing around a putting my system in the trunk and i have a 12v plug there however i notice that the opus has three input wires
( i think i read one of them is to sense the ignetion of the engiine or something liek that so it can shut the carputer off and on witha delay )


anyone want to fill me in.


and overall is a opus powersupply worth the money / functionalyt as aposed to just useing a inverter and a regular powersupply?

Sorry but i have to chuckle at 'rugular'...i promise i'll make it up to you with helpful information.

The three leads that go to the opus are red, black, and yellow. You should connect the black one to chassis ground (so any bolt in your car that is well grounded...anything into the frame should work), connect the red one straight to the battery, and connect the yellow one to something that has 12V only when the car is on. Is the 12V power supply in the trunk switched? If not, you should find one that is and use that to connect your yellow wire to.

by switched you mean???

its always on even if i turn the car off ( crazy vw's)

by switched i mean something that only has power when the car is on...there has to be SOMETHING in your car that meets those requirements...some light or feature or outlet that you can tap a wire into....

now that ithink of it not really im sure i can run something.

now does the thing thats on have to be the powersupply to

or does it being on trigger the opus to turn on and off?

Yes, it only triggers the Opus on/off so it takes very little current (< 50 ma). I tapped mine from one of the wires from the radio harness. The main current is supplied from the Red wire which you normally connect to the battery (with a fuse of course).

even my raido stays on with out the keys in

it turns off and on when i start the car but if i hit the power button on it i can get it to come on with out the key

then take the wire to the fusebox if you have one inside the car, find a fuse that goes live when you switch the ignition on and tap it to that on the fused side

There are two Opus PSU's: 90 watt and 150 watt.

granted it would probably be like 400 bucks or what not but they should have the option for it.

concidering most motherboards reqire a little bit more kick that 150w

( via's dont but they are the exception)

You'll probably find that most "400 watt" inverters are 400 watt peak, with a 200 watt max. sustained power.

The Opus power supplies are good for even Shuttle systems, which are P4 and AMD based systems. Hell, even Shuttle only puts in like a 200 or 250W supply.

Im a noob and just started researching on setting up a car computer. I have a computer laying around with a Asus A7N266 nforce 2 board, Duron 1.2Ghz CPU, 80gig WD harddrive and a CD-RW drive. After searching it seems the Opus 150watt DC-DC powersupply is the way to go. Will the Opus be enough to run this?
