Who is right?? Can you just run a regular PSU and BUY (not build) some kind of startup/shutdown controller?

Yes you can. Who says you can't? MPEGBOX (Mucha) Shutdown Controller or ITPS.

I'm not sure exactly what Audamn means by " a regular PSU", but if you're thinking of one from your local PC store, that almost certainly requires the standard AC supply from a wall outlet so you'll need an inverter. Other power supplies that work on automobile DC voltage ranges (7-18Vdc for the Opus) are available, but not real common, and I haven't seen any cheap ones that have the right features.

Yes that is what I mean by 'regular PSU' and yes I know it needs an inverter. What I need is a device to power the pc on and off, if I use an AC PSU and an inverter. Is there somewhere online that sells either the ITPS or MPEGBOX?

MP3car.com (right here) sells the ITPS and http://home.comcast.net/~zootjeff/shutdown/ is where to get the MPEGBOX unit.

If you are using the ITPS with an inverter, be sure to bypass the regulator (instructions on how to do this are included.)

If plan on using the MPEGBOX unit, be sure that your motherboard supports power-on restart. My EPIA 5000 does not.

awesome.. thank you.

Do you know if the Epia 10000 supports power-on restart?

Should I just try to build a system with the opus if at all posible? I'm quite newbish when it comes to power. My main concerns are whether or not all of my components will work with a 150W PSU. It seems like everyone says that a 3.5" 7200 RPM HDD takes up a huge percentage of that power and I may have problems.

by the way... where in your audi did you mount your pc? got pics?

I don't know about the M10000.

If you are not confident enough to build a Sproggy, then yes the Opus is your best bet. I have yet to see anyone overload an Opus 150w. A 7200 rpm 3.5" drive is not even gonna come close to doing it.

My system is custom mounted inside a gutted cd changer in the trunk - epia, 60gig 7200 rpm 3.5" WD, slim cd, and Sproggy 2.8+ all inside the box. Someday I'll have pics, once the temperature gets above freezing.
