quick question about dc voltage

simple question, asking it in general terms.

will a dc adaptor outputting 9 or 15V DC be good for a 12V device? asking because i have a bunch of 9v and 15v adapters sitting around, but i don't want to test them if they work at 12v and fry my device.

so as a rule of thumb, will those work? (i know it depends but in general.. yes/no)

As a rule of thumb, it won't work. The 9v won't power up the device, and the 15v will fry it.

I'm picturing a nice little bundle of components to tune the power down from 15v to 12v from one of your existing units, which means a trip to the electronics store and spending about as much as...

Ahh screw it. You're better off buying the 12v unit.

Make sure it's both regulated and filtered. I've spent months trying to find the best off the shelf solution. They don't have the voltage range, don't filter or don't have the power I need for my pcs. I've finally managed to track down a supplier. Have a look at my regulator (£10 off for MP3car.com members) so you can compare it with anything else you might see.
