I have a 12v power plug in the back of my xterra. Would it be possible/safe to use the wire from this outlet to power the opus, intead of running a wire all the way to the battery? Thanks.

Yes, that should be fine. If I were you I would t-tap from behind the power point (looks cleaner) and check to see that there is a high enough fuse on it that you won't blow it. Make sure you don't blow the fuse. You will also want to find out if it is a switched power supply or not....is it on even when the car is off? You want it on an unswitched source, but need a connection to like a cigarette lighter that goes on and off when you turn the car on and off to tell it when to power up and shut down.

make sure it has power all the time.. not just when car is on.. you'll also need to run a wire for the key sensor

Please RTFM (Read The Fine Manual) of your Xterra for the current limit of that socket. Most of them will supply only 10 Amps on other vehicles and I do not know the specifics for your Xterra.

Also, you do not state the Opus Power Rating. If it's a 90W, you should be fine. If it's 150W you might be at the limit. Also, get yourself better socket/plug then the one provided. THose lighter plugs are not the greatest and have a nasty habit of having poor contact resulting in overheat situation.

I suggest something like a powerlink connection that are available (75 Amps Rating with 10 Ga Wire, 50 Amps Rating with 12 Ga wire) THis should cost about $10USD in the good US of A For a 2 wire connector( 4 contacts and 4 housings).
