slim dvd vs. regular dvd

any reason why people are using slim drives vs. regular? just size?

my concern is power... one told me that the only thing that will power a full size drive is an opus... will a pw70 handle a regular DVD + 3.5" 5400rpm HD?

or isn't power consumption between the 2 types any different?

But, why get an optical drive. I transfer my music files and movies over firewire. My CarPC has no optical drive..

Cheers,

That is usually correct. My Dell drives are a little different, but all the ones out of the old Compaqs I have ($15 each!) are stand slim line ATAPI connectors that fit the adapters.

I suppose it could be more convenient, but I keep several DVD movies in the hard drive and transfer them by firewire without an optical drive.

Cheers,

Where is a good place to get inexpensive slim DVD drives?

What about extended lenth cables, as my carpc will be about a 8-10ft cable run from the dash?

Speaking of slim DVD drives. Anyone know a cheap place to buy a slot-loaded slim dvd drive? I'm planning to get rid of my full size slot-loaded dvd drive because of power consumption.

I've been down that road and let me tell you it sucks..... There just isn't much choice or availability in Slim Line Slot Load DVD drives....now there is several SLSL DVD+R / CDR drives if you want to spend more on the DVD drive then you spend on the rest of the computer.... like $280 I think... there is a post on here somewhere that gives the Makes and Models...

I went to eBay to get my SLSL DVD, it was $15. It is the iMac drive, made by Matsu****a (or something like that) 8114 (I think is the number).... but I have yet to find an adapter that will take it from the Drive connector to a standard IDE cable. The iDot one is backwards, and I think all the ones you see on eBay are backwards too.....

There is one that is posted somewhere around here that is supposed to work, from AllMacs or something like that.... but it is $30 (twice what I paid for the drive)....

Sorry to muddy the water...

Seems that other than the convenience of having a D/DVD drive the only big "need" is for DVD - so why not just rip your DVDs to DivX and stick them on the hard drive?

Chris.
