Got my new hard drive today.
I've never seen one of the chips on the harddrive catch on fire......
What is wrong with this PSU now?
The harddrives are 80gig Maxtor's. But meanwhile, I put two, 2 gig harddrives and I can hear them spin up fine.
But other things, like my two 80 gigs and dvd, the psu burns them up..

This is the most weirded stuff i have ever heard...
Did you check your volts before connecting...? what is it saying.
and please remove some close pictures of your PSU front and back .. shall be better

where do you guys get the pcb?
are you guys making them?
are the kits still up for sale? if so are there any left with national chips included?
thanks,
eric

If all of your PSU outputs are correct (at the circuit board), double check the voltages at your molex connector(s). Could you have miswired one or more of them (i.e. 12v on the 5v rail)? If so, there's a good chance the genie in your drives might run off leaving a trail of fire and magic black smoke.

You can make the board yourself or buy one from Mastero, if he still has any left. You can buy all the parts yourself or geta kit (without National chips) from Mastero, if he still has any kits left. The National chips are best obtain from National. BTW, they have a fairly relaxed sample policy.

thanks for the info rando
have you built one of these PSU yet?
If so did you make your own pcb?

Voltages are
5
3.3
12.09
-12.001
and the connectors are right. I'm just not sure what to do because so far, my CDRW won't spin up now, and 2 maxtor harddrives are dubs now. But then again, I can run 2 smaller and older harddrives (2 gigs each) and my dvd on it, over and over again. I'm going to go with bad luck, and see try again when I get my new harddrive, again.....

No, but I do have most of the parts. I did make the 5V section in a small project box without a PCB (just used short bits of wire to solder the parts together and hot glue to hold it all in place). It worked but the output wasn't stable above around 1A. I think if you assemble it on a PCB and use the correct parts (not just whatever you have lying around like I did), you shouldn't have any problems though.

If you've already smoked two drive, that should be enough evidence to tell you that something is wrong. Do you have access to a scope? If so, take a look at your 5V and 12V outputs under a couple of test loads (not another expensive hard drive). Perhaps they aren't stable over their entire operating range.

No I don't have access to an scope anymore. When I turn on the psu, both drives spin up. But when I turn it off, and the 12 voltage line slowly drops to 0, and if it doesn't hit 0, and i go to turn the psu back on, the drives won't spin up, and the voltage goes down to 1.7.
It takes about 55 seconds to drop from 12 to 0. So i'm not sure what that means.
Also, the relay (12 volt line), is it a special kind? The one I'm using is a little black one (much like the 5 volt line in the pictures on mastro's website)?

Im aware of that, I was just replying for the other guy as I doubt Mastero will ever post the circuit diagram.
I dont mind ripping it from the PCB layout and have it on protel file for other poeple to see...but I dont like doing this to someone else design. Then again I guess it was originally copied from sproggy and based on manufacturers reference design anyway.
Hey, anyone done any more on this protel file?

OK your problem is your relay ... my friend its not powerfull enough to support the PSU..! change the relay should slove your problem.

If the main relay is the problem, these are the only 2 relay with the highest AMP rating that is pin/size compartible to the one Mastero use.
NTE R22 and OMRON G2RL-1. I have been searching the web to find one at that size with about 20A +, but can't find any. The 2 listed above is about 12/16A.

For the relay, I just used a 12volt, 30 amp car accessory relay.
Once one problem gets fixed, another one always pops up.
The voltages for 5 and 3.3 are right when the computer plug isn't plugged in. When it's plugged in, it's 3.8 and 2.3. I found when I double up on the MBR745's, all the voltages are right, even with the computer plugged in now.
I replaced the mbr's with new ones, but same thing. but when I put two of them together, works..
But now the EPIA won't turn itself on now. (Still works fine on a AC PSU, so the motherboard is still fine)
