Opus 150W PS

Ok, call me stupid but when you all have an Opus power supply and you build your pc. How do you power it up without having to build it in the car? Do you all use an AC/DC adapter? Or do you just power up an old AC ATX power supply and leave it sitting outside the box while you build it and then plug back in your opus when you go back out to the car.

I am built mine using the regular ATX power supply. What I am going to do when i install the opus is Have both power supplies in the case. I have enough room so when I need to bring it inside I will just switch out the motherboard connectors.

well from what what I understand, its better to use the ATX power supply to test the dc-dc psu. You can use the 12V rail rom ATX psu to power and test dc-dc psu like opus. The AC/DC adapter may not provide enough amps to power the mobo.

I actually had to cheat when I wanted to test my 90W Opus...

The problem was that my el-cheapo ATX power supplies were only giving ~11.5 V on the 12V line, but I think my Opus was waiting for 12.5V+ on the IGN line, and so I needed to get the voltage higher. Instead of going from ground (0V) to +12V (12 - 0 = 12V) I went from the -12V to the +3.3V (3.3-(-12) = 15.3)and was able to test the Opus before putting it in the car.

First, you can turn an ATX power supply on without a motherboard by shorting pins 13 + 14 (blk + green).

To get 15.3 (it wound up ~ 14.5 for my cheap PSU), connect the 3.3V on the Opus Ignition (Yellow?) and connect the -12V to the Opus Ground (Black).

Ok so I know where to get 12v and 5v from the hard drive power leads but where do you get the -12v and the 3.3v from.

I have a 2-3 Amp 13.8 DC supply which I got from Tandy/Radio Shack.

Use for all my 12 Testing before it goes in the car. Car stereos, PC, Phone kits etc.

The diagram of an ATX motherboard power connector is about half-way down. If you have a voltmeter to test beforehand, I'd recommend you do -- alternately, you could do as Byron says and buy something from RadioShack. ^^
