i seem to get a 1KOhm short between the bottom two legs of the small 12v relay now, and this is preventing the sdc to work
but when j1 is jumpered the 5v stanby voltage is fine
do you reckon the relay is gone or not? :S

Test the relay by itself.
De-solder the relay and test it outside. Just apply 12V and ground to the coil to see if it clicks.

i applied 12, ground to the bottom two legs, and it clicks fine...
but i'm assuming these two shouldn't have a short
which legs of the relay are which anyway?

If it click, the relay is working.
Check the left most pin (and 10k res) of the BD677 to see if it read 5V when power is hook up. If it read 5V, but no ground on the middle pin, more likely the BD577 is toast. To check for ground on middle pin, check for continueity between middel and right pin (cuz right pin is connect to ground.)
Basicaly this is how the circuit flow.
- When the SDC is on, 5V is coming out of 74HC14 pin6 and thru 10k resistor. That signal (pin3) is switch the BD677 transistor to connect pin 1 and 2 together to send ground from pin1 to pin2 (middle). That ground is then switch/turn on the relay. The relay connect and send 12V (batt level) to 5V StandBy regulator (LM1084).
- J1 when shorted, will bypass the SDC's BD677 switch and directly switch/turn on the relay.

there's a 1k resistance between the two bottom legs of the relay, so i guess i'll need a new one

If you read this thread from the beginning, you would of find this post.
I list all the compartible relays part # from NTE. NTE parts are very easy to get from most local electronic place. I am not sure about digikey on the other 2 relay, but they have the main relay. Part number are on the link I posted.

Matrix, what video card are you using with that A7N8X?
I'm planning to pick up a 35w 2400+ for a similar setup. Debating about a mb with onboard video.

Onboard video. Quality is really good (DVD and winamp vis). I don't play graphic intensive game so I don't know if it can do it or not, but probably do well.
If you can get one of those mATX board that allow you to change FSB or multiplier either via jumper or BIOS. BioStar, and a new AOpen mATX board allow FSB change in BIOS. If you get the same Asus I got, you may have to do "wire mod" to get the mobo recognize correct CPU (mobile) speed.
