Carputer Slowing down BMW E46..gork??..srcstc??
Hi Guys,
Anyone notice a drag on the car when the carputer is on? I have a 2002 E46 and my car feels heavier when the carputer is on. It feels like there's a drag on the alternator or sometime but the car is definitely slower when the carputer is on. Anyone experiencing this, I know Gork and SRCSTC both have BMW, do you guys experience this? I'm using the 150W Opus with an Intel P4 and two PPI amps. Even without the amps it feels the same way.

You have 1200W of amplifiers, yet your 150W car computer is the one slowing your car down? I think you need to look at the wiring - make sure it isnt wrapped around your driveshaft :P

You're kidding us, right?
They're making stronger cars than that in Bayern, aren't they???

I'm not kidding guys. With just the carputer on and without the amps, I can still feel the drag. This is bugging the hell out of me. Looks like I'm the only one that is experiencing this. Hopefully someone will have some insight into this.

i think you feeling your car slow down is purely pyschological... I have a BMW w/ an EPIA PC, xbox, Alpine 1004 head unit, 7" touch screen, 3 amplifiers and an inverter / Carnetix powersupply... and it feels no different when on or off...

i doubt even a rolling road would notice the difference in output power caused by yr alternator needing more of the engines output to induce more current.
The only thing maybe something to do with OBD connection or some sort of wiring of yr carPC that interferes with the cars ECU/electronics. Esp. with all that wattage on yr amps 150W is going to do very little.

On the Opus I have had no problems. An invertor caused a lot more power to be sucked in but even so it wouldn't be noticable.
When the car is cold and idling, and you power up the Car PC, does the RPM increase more than about 1-2% ? That's about what I get - even the heated windscreen uses more than my Car PC. The only car item I have that makes any difference (And even so I don't know if it's a mental head thing) is the Air-con but most people would already agree that something like that uses tons of power.

The only problem I think this could be is if you are somehow interfering with you cars electronics when the PC is on. Can't think how.

get a grounging kit.
i grounded my car and all electrical interferences stopped.
if you have an auto tranny then electrical interference can hinder the ECU and auto trannys abilities. my car would shift late all the time until i grounded my car. just something to check out.
also my headlights got a lot brighter once i grounded.

The added weight of the two amps and two twelves is slowing you down and is making your alternator work harder but the PC... no way. I have the Opus 150 and I don't notice a difference at all. If anything, I would notice it more than you and Gork because I only have the 2.5L I6.
