Newb question on PS's

I am trying to plan out my setup and was wondering about the power supplies and how they are set up.
My question is when I am transferring files via a wireless system, can I plug an extension cord in to run the carputer so it doesn't drain the car battery, or is the only option running from the cars power? And if it needs to be the cars power, do you need to leave it running, or can you transfer a decent amount of files with the car off?
Sorry if these are really stupid questions.

How are you power your system?
If you are powering by DC-DC, you are very much using the car battery. Unless you have an AC PSU laying around and plugin when needed.
If you are powering by Inverter, Just unplug from the inverter and plug in the wall.
Will it drain your battery if not using the wall? Well depend on how capable is your battery, how long does the file tranfering last and how efficiency is your power setup.
