Unhappy laptop power on...again

Read through the various threads but have had problems coming to a decision, since I have noooo electronics skill so would have a nightware wiring a switch to my laptop power button. Anyway, is there any easier option to power the laptop when car starts - so far I was thinking I might just leave it on standby when engine is not on - but wouldn't that run down the battery?
