I know this has been talked about over and over. I read those thread and to me it's a BIG MESS. I got to understand it but i found it hard to dig thru all those post to find the good info. I just want to share with everyone what i came to understand. Big thanks to Laidback for bringing the "fake ups" idea to us.

carPC Turn On / Shutdown Controller

In the BIOS set your motherboard to turn on after powerloss so the second you feed power to the power supply it will turn on.

Get an old serial port device, rip the connector off of it, take the cover off and solder a wire on PIN 8. If you look very closly the pins will be numbered on the connector. Refer to the diagram for wiring.

Go into your control panel -> Power Options - Create a generic UPS with these settings

This will also cure the turn off pop because the deck/amp will turn off before the computer does, as for turn on pop, if you have a pioneer deck like mine, you won't have a problem because it takes a second or two to turn on the amp. Just enough time to let the pop happen when the amp is off.

No it wasnt Laidback's all idea, from what I remember he copied it from a guy called Rick*** or something. Probably dating back in another forum mystrife?

Ever since the "FAKE UPS" words seems to be his idea, I think he used the words on his website. Wee*** also wrote a software for it, cant remember the exact names now.

Yup, I have 2 of those laying around both make by Belkin (at least the label) and are full functional as serial port. Either one of those 2 doesn't work with the LiRC Receiver. I wrote an sample VB program to detect serial pins connection, it doesn't seem to work right. The problem is that they don't work with COM events. Any change in those pins for example break or connect pin 8 doesn't triggle an event. On mobo built-in COM ports, they do triggle an event.

Now I have to test those for the shutdown thinggy on my home PC.

Some of them really do trigger events. It may be the drivers, but I think it's the different chips they use.

it could apply to the diagram that i made, just change the wire going from the "5v -> relay -> pin 8" to "pin 8 -> relay -> pin 4" (but with the 87a (middle pin) relay pin instead of the 87)

You might be able to plug in a serial port to pins on your motherboard, depending of course if your motherboard has the pins to add an extra serial port

The mobo has 2 serial ports and I used them both (IR and my Simple Serial proggy).
