Changing Opus delay shutdown on the fly

I was just reading someones post about a shutdown controller that they created that had a delay button for when they need to stop and pump gas or something, and that got me thinking...

Is it possible to put a spdt switch on the Opus 150 delay pins, so that if the switch is in one position, it will only wait 10 seconds to shutdown when the ACC goes low, and if the switch is in the other position, it wil increase the delay to the next step of 10 minutes? Will this work or be safe to do on the Opus while it's running?

Good thinking, you could infact have a rotary switch to select any of the 4 options on the 150 (10 secs or 20, 40 or 60 mins- i dont see 10 mins in the manual) but I have no idea what effect it would have doing that when its running.

Anybody know if this will hurt the Opus if it is done while running?

thsi would be useful for all the Shutdown controllers/PSUs, I use the carnetix and it is either 15 seconds shutdown or fifteen minutes, I like the fifteen seconds for when I finish at the end of the day but its a pain if I'm grabbing Petrol, running in the shop etc.

That's what I was thinking. I like to take lunch in my truck sometimes and watch a movie, surf the net, download some music, whatever, and don't want to leave my truck running. Most times though I like my 10 second shutdown like when I get home from work.

I'd also like built in remote start/shutdown via an rf remote/keyfob but I can't find anything to do it over here in the UK, there was a perfect combo on here the other day but it was US only :-(

Just buy a cheap car alarm and use the auxiliary output to trigger a relay connected in parralel with the power button wires.

Well, I decided to email Opus tech support and ask them, as they would be the experts. Here's my email and their response:

Subject: Opus 150 DC-DC question

Hi,

I was wondering if you can tell me if it would be safe for the PSU if I wanted to put a selector switch on the delay timer jumpers so that I can change the shutdown delay on-the-fly. For example, I currently have my shutdown delay set at 10 seconds. If I wanted to stop for gas and shutdown my truck, but didn't want the computer to shutdown, I could set my switch to the 10-minute setting before shutting off the truck.

I don't want to damage my PSU by trying it, so I thought you could tell me if it's possible or not.

Thanks in advance
Chris

For those two timing options you only need an on/off switch. (off 10sec. / on 10min.)
You would need to protect the power supply from static electricity that could get in to the PSU through the switch.

So that looks like it would work, but I'm unsure what kind of little circuit it might need to protect the PSU from static electricity. Any ideas?

The switch would just need to be grounded.

You could use one like this to have 3 selections. http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=275%2D664 It would allow 10 seconds and then 2 that are either 10, 20, or 40 minutes.
