if you have a 12v power brick (like from a laptop) you should be able to use that to get the 12v dc. just make sure it's rated high enough to take the load of your computer.

or you can grab a small 12v battery (lipe UPS ones), I use one of those to test and works well for half an hour

I used the 12v off of a standard PSU .. it needs to be connected to a motherboard to power up .. but just hook up the M1 like a drive.. worked great for me

If you know any people who are into Amateur Radio, it's possible that they have exactly what you're looking for as far as testing is concerned. I plan on testing my car pc with my Astron VS-35M (25A continuous, linear adjustable metered power supply – weighs a ton) and doing some simulated crankings (short low voltage) and seeing how it performs. Not practical for everyone, but you never know what’s available.

Further to Neon Eddies post, I got mine to work off a ATX psu without a motherboard.

If you short the green and black on the ATX psu, this forces the PSU to stay on. By pure luck, you can connect the 4 pin P4 connector (2 yellow + 2 black, this supplies +12v) to the ampie connector.
Seems to be working ok, as Im emailing from my SP13000/Ampie/M1-ATX/Standard PSU hybrid monster!
