Post 2nd Battery

I was wondering if this is possible.

How about have a 2nd battery and connect to a carPC then can it be possible to put a carPC in suspend mode automaticly when the car engin is off without worry about draining main battery?

If this is possible it will be awsome setup.

the computer will be alway in suspend mode so I can start the computer really fast.

This was what I was thinking.

have a 2nd battery in the trunk and have a CarPC to have power from 2nd battery ONLY when the engin is off and when the engin is running switch back to main battery, this way even if the 2nd battery got drained out , the computer won't have a problem to start or use .
And the 2nd battery will be recharge while the car is running.

When the car engin is off , by using simple program or relay to put computer in suspend mode automaticlly and using other relay system to get power from ONLY 2nd battery.

And when if the 2nd battery is almost drained out, make the computer to shut off saftly (just like laptop battery system).
When the engin is on, the computer will be restart perfectly by using main battery power and also the 2nd battery will be recharge too.

How do you think about this idea?
If this is possble , there is so many thing you can do with CarPC such as alarm system. One thing I want to do is when the alarm is on , have a computer to record video image around the car using video cam.

One thing I was wondering is how long the battery will last. But I don't think it will be big deal.

Any way what do you think about this idea?
How kinds other problems can there be for this system?

What if ?

I am using that relay with two batteries. It works really well and there is no way I could drain my starting battery.

this can be done, but there are 2 problems to face,1 is that the battery will still be depleated, & normal car batteries don't enjoy constantly cycling like this... won't last too long unless you use a deep cycle type battery...

2nd problem is depending on how much driving you do, the battery may not have a chance to fully recharge between parking cycles, so it will eventually go dead anyway...

there are a few variables to work out with a setup like this, & the best way for it to be sucessful is deep cycle & a big killer alt that can recharge the battery relatively fast, while still providing enough excess amperage for the main use of the alt...

I have pretty much the same thing, sorta like this -

Works a treat, I can leave the carputer running when I just slip into the corner shop etc, and even if I forget it is on, it will not kill the cars battery.

I use a $2 40A relay and it works well. I don't think the current would be anywhere close to 40A... the second battery also makes the computer survives cranking easily, as during cranking the main battery is disconnected.

i dont have any pictures yet as my wires are in a big ball of mess still right now.. i'll tidy it up this weekend and post though.

wiring the stinger was a snap though, run one wire from the main battery to it, one wire from it to new battery, a small ground and a small remote turn on wire and i was all set. i used 4 gauge for the power wires and fused it to 80 amps. i DID still manage to run my main battery low one day after several hours of leaving the car on but that was probably because i wired the remote to a NON-ignition wire, meaning the stinger's relay was triggered even though the car wasnt running, only in the first key position.

this is my $2 setup, fuses near car, pc batteries and PSU not shown. the PC battery is disconnected from car battery when you turn car off (ACC off), and during engine cranking (some cars may not disconnect during cranking).
Code:
