Skinny, what about when you're actually in car? The linear regulators need an input of like at least 12.5V to give you a 12V steady line, so you're limiting yourself to only being able to use your computer while the power supply is turned on?
and what happens when the voltage drops? you're going to feed 8V to your hard drive and cause it to go wacky?
I was reading up on "the 7 power supply sins" and it's quite interesting... I'll post a link when I can find it...
actually I highly recommend that you head over to national's power website to get information about the snags of making a simple power supply.
Don't forget that crappy power can kill a computer really quickly.

After replacing 3 hard drives because of a defective Arise DC-DC, I'll second that!

Well, I only wanted to use the carputer while the car is running, as I am going on a LONG driving holiday in 2 weeks..
If the battery voltage drops, it only drops to about 11volts, and thats while the engin is cranking, and with a 11volt input, the power supply outputs about 10, and this is enough to keep the mobo going, but the HD will spin down, but seeing as I am not intending on using the carputer without the car running, this is not a problem..

lol, a p100 @75 generates way more heat than it does at 100 or overclocked at 120

OK, OK...If there's nothing constructive to add I'll just close the thread...
We've all been through this before, and it got nowhere. Some people choose to learn via trial and error, and he's not harming anyone else by wasting his own time.

That's why you always use junk loads when testing unproven designs, buddy.
Too bad about your hardware, that's shabby. Better luck next time.

No, you see, I wasn't testingit, I already had, but I wanted to see if it could power the celery 400, which was sitting on the floor with lots of cables behind it, and as I plugged the cables in, I accidently picked up, and plugged the the mains cord into the DC-DC power supply..
I blew a house fuse, and teh supply, and everything that was plugged into it..
YAY!!!!!!!!
