BimmaDrew,

How did you get the front of the case to fold down to gain access to the button?

I usually use the brute force and ignorance methodology to getting into things, but this time I felt I needed a different way!

^^^ i'm a newbie and don't really want to keep kicking the dead horse, however, the setup from above webmaster's design:
what is it exactly doing on shutdown?
1. the car is turned off and the driver pulls out the key, the circuit simulates a shutdown button being pushed and shuts down the computer. what happens if it hangs?

OR

2. the car is turned off and the driver pulls out the key, circuit simply cuts power from the computer and the machine turns off instantiously.

i'm such a moron right now

please enlighten me.

Lol...No, brute force will only rip out your MotherBoard.

There are screws that are holding the MB down. If i remember right, you just need to unscrew 2 black ones that are on the side of the MB closest to the front face plate. But you'll also need to unscrew a couple silver screws on the MB as well. This will allow you to pull up on the board so you can pull out the front plate (it has a couple tabs that are snadwiched under the MB that the black screws also go through).

You don't have to completely take out the MB, just be able to tilt the front side of it up enough to get the front plate off. Once you do that, you can use brute force to unsnap the rest of the front plate. Just be careful.

This thread does a good job of explaining what the module does. The diagrams in the thread can make it a little confusing, but omit trying to understand them until you have the concept down then go back and then take a long look them.

I went back and reviewed the image in your post very closely and I saw what you are describing and have done that. However I either have a very stubborn front plate or I am being a wuss, but I can't get it to release. So with that said, I believe (before the brute force and ignorance model kicks in) I will take the motherboard out and remove the plate.

I may have a question in the future about the button, but I will hold that in reserve.

It does take a little bit to get it out, but mabe your front plate is hung up on a part of the MB...not sure. It doesn't hurt to take out the whole MB. It's just a few more screw and the heat sink that you have to take out.
