LM2587 chip getting too hot

I need help. I have just completed my second Sproggy power supply (the first was a bit messy) but the LED doesn't work. Also, the LM2587 chip gets extremely hot. Is this normal.

I have yet to check whether the volts are coming out the other side.

Please see this thread here

Check the voltage across the LED to see if there is one first, then check to see if it is the correct way round.

Also is there a heat sink on the chip, if not fit one.

Also check for short circuits and the usual stuff.

Total re-design underway: on the whole progress is very slow as the car is taking up too much time :)

i read the other post and it said you are having trouble with heat sinks... if you need to mount them i suggest getting a heat sink kit they are very helpful. you should only need one kit, if im reading the description right.

can you measure the voltages that are being outputted on the output pads.

hmmm, a little more info please

Update... not good...

I swapped over the 587 chips with another that I had and now the solder starts to melt between the MUR120 and SA28A.

Sorry if this is vague but I have little knowledge of electronics and thought this would be a good way to learn.

PS. How do I check the output voltages. I have a multimeter and can check the input but I don't know where to put the multimeter pins on the circuit.

Sounds like you have put the SA28A diode back to front and it is short circuiting. Double check the diode directions. Best practice would be to replace both diodes with new ones, as if they got hot enough to melt the solder they are probably damaged.

on the solder side of the board, use the pencil probes that you have for your multimeter (i hope), touch the black one to the "gnd" pad (metal) and then use the red one and touch that to one of the other pads (+12, -12, +5, -5, +3.3, power good). however, if you are melting solder between two of the diodes that is not good.

advice: hold off on turning that thing on again. it sounds like you have some stuff installed wrong. double and triple check the polarites of everything on the circuit. make sure no solder has short circuited across 2 or more pads.

someone will help. trust me.

Woo hoo

Thanks to everyone who helped, Sproggy got it spot on, I had wired the SA28A diode on the wrong way. I think trying to do it late in the night caused the problems. I noticed it this morning and everything works fine. I have a heatsink on it too, and am getting all the right output voltages.

Cheers guys, you're the best.
