PyCar roadmap

Guys,
Just a heads up. I'm still working on PyCar and making it ready for summer release with many things added. It includes a roadnav clone and fully featured HW DVD support( through df_xine ) on CLE266.
I will be making a release of PyMedia with optimized codecs once I have it properly tuned.
Also I will have support for USB headunit adapters, small graphical USB LCDs( 128x64 ) and of course USB touchscreens.
The goal is to make minimal release with as stable core as possible + some basic US navigation with simple routing( roadnav clone ).
During the next week I'll post more detailed roadmap.
Of course it is still open source and I gladly accept any help or feedbacks.

[EDIT]
Here is the roadmap for PyCar. Subject to change. Let me know if you have any questions.

1. Limited features Linux distro, 9Mb image
- mp3/ac3/aac/ogg/wma
- dvd/divx/xvid/wmv
- cddb support
- 20 secs boot time on ME6000
- touchscreen support( lilli, xenarc, egalax TS )
- splashscreens
- cd ripping
- full setup from PyCar including HDD installation from live CD

Mar-20

First "unofficial" prerelease for 1.3 version( EPIA-M only ):
http://indashpc.org/downloads/software/pycar-1.3.iso ( 10MB )
upon boot PyCar can be started by: /etc/init.d/rc.pycar
Have fun !

2. Limited features Linux distro
- FM radio support ( D-Link )
- XM radio support ( XMPCR )
- XM/FM ripping

Apr-30

3. First cut with linux based GPS embedded
- roadnav optimized version. Touchscreen friendly.
- simple routing
- 3D GPS nav views

June-30

I will build the generic version for all PCs, but it will be much slower since the software emulation is not efficient and you still have to provide something like sound, usb drivers as modules to the kernel as package.

roadnav pretty much rely on Tiger data. My goal is to make it independent of the map source. This way anyone can use NavTeq for instance. Will see if it is possible, don't see much problems from the first look.

Thumbs up

This sound really nice!

Keep up the good work, as it sounds like the first workable linux-solution!

For generic VESA cards the graphics can be done in software which means real slow. If you have the following cards: Radion, Matrox or similar, it will be non issue though.

BTW I noticed FM support for Dlink. What will it require to support other HW too? Are we talking about loading correct kernel module or about something else required too?
Do you have TV support on your todo list too? It should be pretty easy with mplayer or xawtv, right?

edit: I have checked xawtv progress after some time.. and I am very impressed. It seems they gone very long way. lot of independent shell tools, such as scantv for channel tuning, fbtv for tv over frame buffer... this all na make TV integration very easy and in fact could be done by users if only PyCar supports launching external applications.
edit2: tvtime looks great too imho: http://tvtime.sourceforge.net/

PyCar can support launching ext progs. The problem is in the common interface though.
They all have to accept the same keys from touchscreen and have similar look.
I don't think *nix environment have something close to COM to achive that.
Besides that PyCar has a way to use external codecs like mplayer and will use external drivers as well under its interface. So D-Link will be an option by default since I have the driver already...

I shall be glad to help this think tested from the begining (including even compilation). Have luck and one day I'll hope to drop my last Windows-based system (Configured for a friend Infomap ... seems to be ok, but the idea with any kind of database - Navtech maps from Mappoint for example is gorgeous).

I am still very excited seeing all the plans from your roadmaps. Is there any way I could help you with development? For example making your distro more feature rich, etc...
I know its not even out yet... but hey it should be out by end of the weekend
