Get ****ed, Ryan.
I'm downloading the beta tonight so I can play with it a little tomorrow evening and offer worthwhile feedback.

You don't seem to like touchscreens very much... so right now the layout is really optimized for rotary controls. Will there be some kind of skin or layout or something to optimize QCar for touchscreens, i.e. full control of QCar via screen?
I really like what you are doing with the software, I'm just not comfortable with using some additional control device. So are you going to accomodate people (or better: customers ) like me?

Looks fantastic so far guys.
This may sound a weird question.. but it sounds like this will be a "bring in your car and we will whack this gear in for you" kinda thing. Well, i'm in Western Australia.. whats the chance of being able to purchase the software only when its all finished?
My apologies if this has been asked already.. i've waded through the thread but i may have missed it (its huge!).

I have been testing for a while now, and have met jirka when he was in london, so he has seen my setup working...
I understand the desire not to rely on touchscreen on his behalf, and if you thought of it as a safety issue then you will understand that it is alot safer to use a rotary control, i primarily wanted touch screen use only, which is what i do most of the time, but i did actually buy a controller so if i need to do anything while i'm actually driving i have the option available to me as well.
As for how touch screen works, i have had no problems with the size of screen and the size of buttons, it works very well with touch.... It will be interesting to see how the touch developes when skins start to show themselves for this app, as i'm sure a few will be for touch based users...

The software itself is basically done, except for navigation, which is a kind of hot-fix at the moment (we do have a working module, but you must use an external app to do the routing and then download the file to the car). However we have made a big progress this week and can now work with maps in several standard formats directly and things are moving pretty fast.
So we are 95% focused on the navigation at the moment (the remaining 5% being closer integration with car hardware in our demo installations). You should see some results in about 3 weeks.
And BTW: we are most probably going to MWSF in January.

Just so you know jirka, the smart won't be available to go to MWSF, cost too much to get it there....! Lol
Am hooking up with the guys from route buddy next week as discussed, so will fill you in on all the details after...

Yeah, and some of the Yanks may not understand that tiny thing is actually a car anyway :-D We will probably be getting some "real" car locally.

OK, a small status update:
- We have finished modules for e-mail, car monitoring (temperatures, voltages, fuel level, different switches etc.), as well as a non-mapping navigation (you see a curve to follow and instructions, but no map). Thanks to Zach Rosen and BluePhone Elite 2, we now also have a full handsfree calling capability (we will be improving this significantly when BPE2 is released).
- At the moment, we are busy with the "real" navigation. We are now officially a partner of TeleAtlas and will be selling their maps, but we can also work with maps from NAVTEQ and possibly other suppliers if needed. Thanks to folks at FrontBase, we have today resolved what we have seen as the last major speed issue so our demo map viewer is working very nicely and we should have the first plug-in for QCar in about a week or so.
- There are several smaller improvements as well, mainly to increase responsiveness of the user interface and prepare foundations for future functionality.

integration with RouteBuddy?
I have purchased routebuddy... will I need just the maps (teleatlas)? I guess my question is how well does QCar integrate with RouteBuddy? I read the post on page 10, just wondering if anything had been solidified as to how the two will play together.

At this moment our navigation module is not directly based on Routebuddy and does not work with RB-supplied maps, although they do come from the same source.
We have decided to base our navigation on FrontBase as the primary data storage. As a result, we get extremely fast map drawing and additional functionality like synchronization and on-demand map download. So we will not force anyone to buy perpetual licenses, but QCar users will be able to get (significantly cheaper) temporary licenses for maps of areas they do not need regularly. So if you go from Holland to Spain for holiday, you can use maps of France and Spain for two weeks for some Euro 10 or so instead of buying them for Euro 100.
BTW: at the moment we have track-up map view, but we do not have the "bird-eye" perspective view that most of the navigation solutions provide.
As for the integration: we can write the track log files that can be imported into Routebuddy and when/if Routebuddy offers export to KML files, we will be able to read them and use for navigation.

Speaking of Euros: What is your estimation on QCar's final price? I am still planing my car-computer and so I'd could really use a number to calculate my expenses.
