As for the XM / Sirius - a friend of mine is doing some research right now in the US, but any suggestions are welcome. We need a compact unit, that can take +12V or lower and can be controlled over USB (eventually serial but since this would mean an additional adapter, we prefer USB) and preferably has optical output.
Okay. If you want to make it as easy as possible to get hardware for XM i would suggest using the standard Xm Direct Tuner. This is compatibal with the MP3 Car USB Xm Controller sold on the store site. I think this will make everything easier to standardize.

being able to buy the software and the hardware needed for each "wanted" option, would be nice.
like, including the OBDII connector, a GPS antenna etc etc

Excellent work! I'm planning to install a Mac in my car this next spring, and QCar will be part of it!
Concerning the software being sold in a bundle with hardware, I find it a good idea: it will be helpful for newbies like me and/or two-left handed people and/or lazy guys and/or... ok, I stop it. . Many people will want to buy the frontend alone.
So both solutions (with and without bundle) seem complementary to me.

Perhaps, like buying a car, you can just charge a base price (the Software alone) and anything else is an "add-on option" with appropriate prices.
maybe offer package deals of certain configs for like a few dollars cheaper than if you picked and chose.
i dont know what things will be offered hardware wise by QCar, but this seems a nice way to get it into the hands of those who want it, and without a lot of fluff. or, it they wanted, alot of fluff.

I would like that..
Right now, My system is pretty complete.
But I am NOT really happy with my front end.
I am using several programs to do what I want, (and badly I am sure)
I would love to use One program, that does all the features.
(I am sure I am not saying something you havent heard 100 times before)
AND..
I would pay extra for a GPS that would put a zip code into a google search
(local gas stations, etc)
I would pay extra for a mac based ODB-II interface (with hardware)
I would happily add something that gives me more features of using my carputer.
I have the power of a computer in my car, and I am using 1 1/100th of it
help me use the other 99%
Jonathan

We have made some more progress. A new testing build should be released on Monday. It will contain some of the modules I have already described (mail, improved OBD) as well as a new tiny module called PositionBeacon. This module can transmit the position of the car to our new application which can be used to track the cars, including history and a lot of data (such as driver' name, fuel consumption counter etc.). I have just uploaded and launched the first usable build of the application...
And well, I must admit, the web app it is written in C# and runs on Windows. WebObjects is nice, but I would really like to get an opportunity to talk to the <censored> at Apple, who decided to make it Java-only.
P.S. Of course the app will provide strong access control to make sure each user can only track the cars he is authorised to track!

This looks fantastic. Please let us know the site address when it is complete. I'd also love to see some screen shots of the navigation interface.

Yes and no. We have some improvements, tested some more hardware parts (NaviLock USB GPS for example), but we also encountered few problems with text entry using the rotary encoder, so we had to postpone the new test release, originally planned for the last weekend.
Main improvements are:
- mail plugin is able to handle multiple accounts
- mail plugin supports encrypted connections
- some problems fixed in the position beacon module (for web tracking)
- possibility to play music from a folder on filesystem (ie. not in iT library)

Will there be Australian Maps
Currently running Bootcamp and XP on my Mini as the only GPS app with Australian maps is Destinator.
Very interested but only if there are maps.
Cheers
