I've been running one of these for about six or seven months and I thought I would make some comments.

1. Sometimes, just turning the knob registers as a push-turn. As far as I can tell, this tends to be more likely after pushing the knob for some other reason (e.g., a push turn, a push, or a push-hold). The good thing is that such an error usually only happens once, so subsequent turns are indeed registered correctly; only the first turn is interpreted as a push-turn. Also, it doesn't appear to be a function of the mechanical parts getting stuck in the "pushed" position. I believe this because the error will occur even if I pull up on the knob after it has been previous pushed down. It's a little annoying but I suppose you can't expect much for $20.

2. Pushing on the knob will wake my Mac Mini from sleep. I don't think this is due to anything particular with the powermate, just a property of USB devices on Mac Mini's. Although, I suspect this has been a reason for at least one drained battery in my car. I think this can be resolved by connecting my USB devices to a hub that is powered solely by the power supply and not the mini so I plan to go that route eventually.

Just my 2 cents...

Can you assign it a function for holding it in for a set amount of time, say three seconds? I want to set one up to control a music program and have it be able to go from the control screen to the browsing screen by holding it in for 3 seconds.

i'm really only using it for volume right now, but it is the best 25 bucks i have spent. it does the job well, with a little bit of style in the process.

From what I understand, you can assign functions to the following inputs:
  • push
  • long push
  • turn left
  • turn right
  • push turn left
  • push turn right

I don't remember exactly how long the "long" push is, but, the duration is not user definable (although, it might very well be 3 seconds).

you can use the powermate along with girder and program any function you like ie double click, hold for 1 sec, hold for 2, hold for 3, etc.

wow i got a black one off ebay for like 23 shipped...i had no idea that i got such a steal!

@trinky have you tried devcon to shut it down temporarily before standing by? the 2.0 beta drivers have worked well for me and the whole "dim the LED when the volume is lowered" is kind of neat i guess!

Is it possible to program the powermate so when you click, instead of muting, you lower the volume to say 30%, just like a "att" button on a regular car headunit?

Just got 2 in. E-Bay.. I paid $17(shipped) for one and $21(shipped) for the other.

It's pretty handy. I wish i could change the cord placement to the bottom, as I want to mount these in the truck whenever I get the system setup.

Anyone know of any other controllers like the powermate? I knew there was maybe an "Explorer" one. Looking at whatever is available, even though I do like the Powermate.

What version drivers are you guys using? i cannot get this thing to work for the life of me. xp, and it just keeps seeing it as a HID compliant mouse and refuses to let me change the driver.
