Hardware Review: nVIDIA GeForce FX5500 256MB PCI Video Card FX 5500 V29

FrontEnd: StreetDeck

EBay: $40

My company switched phone carriers which allowed me to go from PCMCIA card to USB EVDO. By doing that, I was able to remove the PCMCIA daughterboard and BAM!! Room for a video card!

If there is any way for you to put this card in your carputer, it is more than worth it! EVERYTHING is so much faster. Navigation screens load faster, screen changes are great, even the visualizations in the background of StreetDeck run flawlessly.

I did have to modify my case, even having to break out the dremel, but it was well worth the effort.

If you are at all tired of slow responses in your FrontEnd software, this is the answer! The reason I went with this particular card was price vs. ability. A Geforce card for $40 with 256mb is hard to pass up.

Do you have any issues with crashing? I find my system crashes which i'm assuming this is because the cpu is bogged down at 100%. I was going to just drop this MOBO, but if the new graphics card will resolve my issues then i can hold off. Any input? Also, what codec packs do you use? Also, I've been reading that this card requires 250Watts. how are you powering off a M2-atx 160w?

What front end? 1.1.1.0 streetdeck crashes constantly, but 1.0.9.8 is extremely stable and no crashing. Check your ram. I had crashing originally, but found the ram was bad. Turn on full test in bios.

Here's a nice list of video cards and their tested power consumption. Unfortunatly, the GeForce 5500 FX is too old for the list.

That card comsumes between 10~15 watts of power. You should be fine as long as you don't overload any of your rails. There's a guide on here somewhere that can help you with making sure you have enough power.

Please describe what occurs before it fails. No Post No Beep, Doesn't display in Windows, etc, etc. It'll help determine if this is a power issue or not.

Personally, I have a 220 watt startup/shutdown controller using an 8200 video card and it runs just fine. The card may be just seated inproperly or the motherboard might have a special port on it for P.O.S. systems. Alot of the industrial motherboards have them and you have to tell it to use AGP/PCIE instead.

EDIT:
