Hardware Review: MoCoSo Lilliput EBY701 Transflective

A little while ago there was a discussion regarding the performance of transflective screens in which somebody recommended the modified Lilliputs by MoCoSo. Most people have only known of the MP3Car ones (which are usually sold out and fairly overpriced). Needless to say, when I was given the opportunity to test one out myself, I had to take it!

MoCoSo has a nice little line of sunlight readable screens, and the one Im testing is the Optically Bonded EBY701.

Monitor

This first picture is basically what you get in the package, along with an AC adapter. I received my monitor already assembled into a black double-din case ($75) and requested that I got to keep the old monitor assembly. By allowing MoCoSo to install your screen into the new assembly, you maintain your warranty and if anything happens, you're covered.

This is a picture of the screen installed into the assembly, the way you would receive it in a box.

This is the back of the assembly. If you'll notice, the PCB is screwed into plastic rails that hold the LCD into place and provide isolation for the electronics. MoCoSo also keeps the button board (at the top) and replaces the infrared sensor wires with thicker and longer ones. You also receive a new modified connector along with the original, just in case.

Pros

Well, the viewing on this thing is nothing short of spectacular. First off is a picture of the day outside when these photos were taken. I plugged the monitor into an outlet on my porch and attached my laptop to test it all out. The sun was bright and it was about 2:00PM local time. I was getting tanned by simply sitting there!

Here's the screen attached with the sun right above. If you look to the left at the window, you can see how gorgeous the day is and judging by the glare, how bright it is out! The monitor appears perfect in the brightest sunlight I could get!

This one's a little less focused, but you can see the sunlight barely washing away the bottom edge of the screen. That's about as bad as I could get it.

And here's the picture that says it all! If you look towards the left side of my laptop screen, you might be able to make out an icon or two but the glare takes right over the image! The exact same display on the transflective LCD appears perfectly and you can see my background very clearly. The contrast is still good too!

Cons

There was only one major downfall I found with this product, and it has nothing to do with the screen itself. It is about the mounting system in the double-din housing. It's hard to see in this picture (wasn't using my own camera), but pay attention to the mounting of the plastic "rails" I mentioned earlier. For some reason, the plastic rails bend slightly toward the back of the screen, and often times those little screws do not provide enough coverage to hold the plastic piece to the assembly. Because of this, the circuit board part falls off of the package and the LCD itself comes out too. These screws either need a small washer or a bit of glue to hold them on for good.

Overall
This screen is fantastic. I am 100% satisfied with the quality and the service that Chris from MoCoSo provided. The double-din installation, not so much.

Product: 10/10 - it works better than described.
Price: 7/10 - at $600 it crushes MP3Cars price, but still room for improvement.
Service: 10/10 - Chris was very helpful and knowledgeable.

Double-Din: 6/10 - The installation was great, but it should not be falling apart.

I hope you guys find this review useful! If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I think the notches where the silver screws are shouldnt be notches... they should be closed holes. The plastic is a little flimbsy and thats the reason it is falling apart.

I do not like the layout of the front. The sensor should be at the bottom in the middle. I am sure they tried... it may be too big to fit there.

The screen is in no way centered on the assembly. I am interested to see what it looks like installed. I am super super anal about little things like this and if its not centered it would bother the crap out of me.

I agree with the good review of this screen. I am thoroughly impressed by it. I have not found one zero-visibility condition for it and I've been using it for 3 months now. I drive home on the highway with the sun behind me and even then I can see well enough to read the names of songs. The case is the only flimsy thing about it. I made the screen fall back when I installed it and had to take it out and then put the screw back into the notch. Overall, it's great for the money.

By optical bonded, do you mean true transreflective? I recall seeing MoCoSo selling some that appeared to just be simply upgraded with the 3M Vikuiti films in the back and they charged a whole lot more. The double din frame looks VERY neat though.

Yeah I don't think it's true transflective, but it's definitely way beyond my expectations.

Yes, true transflective. They added films and then bonded the touchscreen to the LCD so there's no glare. It's brilliant.

Do they have a website I can look at? I googled but I don't see a website listed.

Edit: Ah nvm I found it. It's actually Mo-Co-So.

I have this screen and i would have to disagree with the sunlight readable but then again my only comparison is the linitx transflective screen. I have no comparison to a non transflective screen. I know i can barely see anything in direct sunlight.

*****EDIT*****
Correction. You must have the optically bonded transflective since it cost 600 dollars. I did not buy the optically bonded transflective

I have had one of the EBY701 Lilliput Transflective Optically Bonded with AntiGlare for about 3 weeks now. I bought it from www.mo-co-so.com. I bought it pre-installedin the double din housing. It was about $700 shipped.

A bit about my background. I have made custom DIY Projectors for over 6 years. I built a 1080p Diy projector 5 years ago when commercial 1080p projectors costs over $10,000 - $15,000. Mine cost $1,600. I have taken apart and tried several dozen lcd's for these projects. And I am a videophile. Meaning I can see the differences in quality of monitors and screens very quickly and easily.

That is why in my first build I bought a 10.6" 1024x768 screen from a company who makes screens just for commercial airplanes and flight simulators.

So as you can see I am very picky.

So when I ordered the Lilliput from Mo-co-so I was very worried as can be imagined. i sent several emails back and forth to Chris to make sure of the products worth and claims.

Having had it installed for 3 weeks and using it several hours a day, I can say it was well worth it. I have not encountered a situation where the screen wasn't totally readable. And this includes while watching VERY dark movies. And there is no glare at all. With other screens even the Kenwood double din I had in it before, if someone was sitting in the passenger seat with a light shirt , there would be severe glare on the screen. And the Kenwood was supposed to be optically bonded and glare proof.

There a few things I have observed though:
1. The screen has a slightly bluish/purple tint because of the transflective material I am sure. There is not a tint when there is anything on the screen but there is when there is a totally black screen. Shouldn't bother most people.
2. Of course it is near impossible to get 800x480. So at the other resolutions text is slightly blurry and stretched. Not Mo-c-s-'s fault I know, but it would be nice if they offered other screens that didn't have this problem.

The screen is still very touch sensitive and I don't have any problems with it sensing fingertip touches.

Also the screen is led backlit and very bright. In fact it is pretty easy to get it to bright to drive at night. LOL The colors and blacks are excellent on it , especially once you tweak the settings a bit. Looks very good with my Blu-Ray movies and Dvd's.

Well that is all , if I have a few minutes I will snap some shots if that is requested.

i bought a 'sunlight readable' eby701 off ebay for $299 (i pretty much stole it they guy said, i guess nobody saw the auction)... they do work very well. even during the sunniest days you can still read the screen with sunglasses on. its brighter then any of my dash instruments, and while it could certainly be even better its extremely nice for the money you pay.

Yes but do you have the Transflective with Optically Bonded touchscreen that has Ag on it?

I do and I really don't see how it could be any better.

another thing that I noticed on my double din frame is that there is an extremely tight fit for the video signal wire...to the point where it bends one of the side panels out just so the video cable can fit...in my opinion the frame from bybyte...the only frame on the market...is a peice of crap and is not worth the $30 plus shipping that it sells for...id say like $10 at most...they need to make another metal version....

i really don't know. they ran around $450 when they were around, and i got mine for $299 because nobody bit on the auction (last winter, in the middle of the bank collapse). it looks exactly like it does in those pictures even though those pics really dont do it justice. i can read the screen easily in the brightest sun even with sunglasses on. whatever process was used, it looks perfect and works excellent in the daylight.
