Thumbs up AU Optronics Screen and VGA driver board (large images)

Well, I know I promised everyone a "review" and I will review it once I get time to play with it, but I got the display and driver board this afternoon and it's too cool to keep it from y'all another week. Initially I was getting a transflective screen as well, but the factory didn't want to deliver one unless I wanted one really bad. According to my contact they where having production problems, so I'll get it later on.

The Display is a AU Optronics 7" Model: A070VW01 (with touch screen)
Product Specification: Panel Only
Product Specification: Panel with touch screen

The VGA controller board is a Promate JLPA070VW01
Product Specification: VGA Controller

Part numbers:
JLPA070VW01-2 (TFT + touch integrated, ~ 320cd)
A070VW01 (TFT panel , 400cd)
JDBK070F2B1P (VGA controller kit, incl. cables, inverter and OSD panel)
JDBK070G1A0P (AV/VGA kit, same as above)
JDBK070T1A0P (LVDS-card for A070VW01)
JTHS070F1A0 (7'' touch panel)
JTHC084DUA1 (USB touch controller)

Initial thought is that it's worth every penny, it's way brighter than the Lilliput, better contrast, better image quality overall and faster.
When the Lilliput takes ~2 seconds to switch (when changing resolution) the AU screen does it instantly.
The brightness is enough to wash out the image, so I don't think I'll have to do a backlight upgrade.
Another good thing iwth the TFT panel is that it's rated for automotive use, so the operating temp. range is -30 - +85 degrees celcius, that's for the panel only, with touch screen it gets worse... but as long as my screen doesn't freeze up I really don't care id the touch screen doesn't work for a few minutes
The only annoying thing about it is that it doesn't seem to remember the previous settings, but that may just be my fault.

The VGA controller is a dream, the basics is that it has 3 AV inputs and can detect 800X480 resolution.
But the sweet thing about it is that everything is controllable over RS232, so you can select AV input, VGA, brighness, dimming, everything via RS232.
For me that's perfect, because I can detect via CAN-BUS which gear the car is in and what speed, so I can then use that information to automatically switch to rearview/front camera without pressing any buttons.
Furthermore, the car has a integrated lighting control, also readable through can-bus, so I can auto-dim the screen with the cars own dimmer.
For those that doesn't have this option, the VGA board has a dimming input, just supply it with 0-12V and it'll do the dimming for you.

Now, on to the images:
First one is with the Lilli at 100% brighness and the AU at ~25%, second is with both at 100%. As you can see the AU is plenty bright. (same exposure setting on both images)

Screen and controller.

The kit.

Does the screen rotate? It's a different way up in each of the different pictures.

I assume it was the top lcd in the side by side comparison? Can you take another picture with both at 100% but adjust the exposure down so the AU looks good and we see how dark the lilliput is in comparison?

The whole kit was $450, but that's with our hefty sales tax of 25%, import taxes and other stuff, so I'd assume that you US guys could get it for ~$350.

Yes, the screen does rotate, you can flip the image on the VGA controller, selecting which way is UP.

Thing is with 100% brightness that the AU doesn't look "good" as it washes out a bit.
This is a correct exposure where the AU screen looks "normal" at 100%.

The _panel_ is A070VW01, but the panel with factory mounted touchscreen has the article number: JLPA070VW01-2
and I'm using the one with the touch screen allready mounted.

No, it's not integrated in the steel frame (panel housing) which I reckon is good since you can change it if/when it fails.

If you look at the specs. page 15 & 16, you'll see the dimentions of the touchpanel, it's glued onto the frame of the LCD panel (but still replaceable).

That is a good looking screen! RS232 control is totally where it's at. I wish this thing had been easily available a couple of years ago when I did my install

Yep, and since power on/off is controllable it's bye bye to all the annoying "hibernating" "resuming to windows" texts.
You can simply have it switch on and fade in once windows/your front end is loaded and then fade out and switch off when you turn the thing off.

Sure, it'll be blank for a few seconds longer but I'd prefer that over "resuming from windows".
Just need to get some connectors so I can start playing around with some software to control the thing

Local distributor over here in Sweden, you're probably better off calling Promate in the US asking them for a local source or if you could buy it from them.

The kit.

So if I wanted to have the same setup you have I need
JLPA070VW01-2; I assume it comes with the USB controller
JDBK070F2B1P; or JDBK070G1A0P if I want A/V inputs?
JTHC084DUA1; Needed if touch intergrated panel doesn't come with controller

What is JDBK070T1A0P LVDS-card for A070VW01? I assume you only need that if you don't buy the integrated panel.

Exactly !
The "KIT" is only the VGA controller, inverter and OSD buttons, so you'll need the JTHC084DUA1 (USB Touch screen controller).
The LVDS interface is used instead of the VGA controller if you'd wish to use LVDS but that's a straight LVDS interface without all the fancy features of the VGA controller, so in my opinion it's not worth it for the sake of LVDS.

My order was:
JLPA070VW01-2 7" TFT with touch
JDBK070G1A0P 7,0"AV/VGA DVB Kit
JTHC084DUA1 USB Ctrl RES 4W
