Why are you using vista in your car?
OK everyone this may seem like a stupid quesiton, but really it is not. Understand the logic here. RR works great under XP, now MS has a new OS "Vista" and RR doesnt work. So why use vista. What is the advantage it gives you in your car that XP didnt.
Here is the answer, NOTHING, KEEP XP and everything will work fine. If you insist on using VISTA then dont use RR. Use the MCE it will work great for you.

I'm not using vista in my car, but I can think of two reasons to over XP (that I know of)
Combined suspend/hibernate mode (write to disk like hibernate, but suspend).

Vista ain't heavy when you vlite it and even strip it down some more by hand.
And he! Vista got bigger, carpc's get faster.
If i want Vista i want Vista and if i want XP i want XP
It looks like people want to be able to make the choice themselfs
But one more thing.
My carpc is XP but my four notebooks are all vista.
I always make my roadrunner install ready on my workstations and move it over by USB.
Now that Vista does not work i can't do this anymore (ofcourse i can with VM but it more work)
And can we now please stop all those useless why why why vista topics.
They clotter up the screen.

I didn't really have a choice. I tried to install XP on my hardware, multiple distributions, but they would never provide an activation code. I have a feeling it was a hardware issue. Don't know for sure. Anyway I have vista, I perfer to use RR. You will be there someday so be thankful that most of the bugs will be worked out by then.

excactly someone has to support the new OS so apps can be developed for it so when everyone migrates later they have a bug-free app.
not me though. my xp install works too well, and i can't be bothered setting up phoco again!

Guys, I am one of the first to jump onto new technology. OS's ect. I can say this though, there (Currently at least) is no reason to try and run RR in Vista.
Yes, I have Vista installed in a dual boot configuration on my system, and have used that to test programs and such..... BUT I think enough of the people in these forums, that are pretty tech savy know, that Vista uses more memory, is slower, and requires a fairly up-2-date system to run well. This being the case, WHY would anyone want to try to run RR on this new OS is beyond me! Sure, I have tried RR, the skin editor and such under my dual boot system inside Vista, and it was far from perfect to say the least. BUT this was just a test.
For an OS that is more memory intensive, is far more hardware demanding and such, I see no reason whatsoever to try to pull this off on a CarPC. Yes, Vista has ONE major advantage in a CarPC enviorment, thats the hybrid standby/hibernate mode. Sure I wish that XP had that, but it surely is not enough to make me want to try to slow down and cripple my CarPC with an unneccessary bloated OS.
Give it some time..... things may change, but for now its just now worth it!

stripping down the os allows it to run on slower hardware.
Also take note that windows vista embedded is being used to build UMPC and dual din sized carpc solutions. These are meant to run on slower hardware efficiently. And after testing some units from CES it works damn well.
Theres nothing wrong with vista in a carpc, as long as you disable Aero.
My main reason for not running vista on my carpc is it doesnt really support GDI/GDI+ well. And the next verion of RR is all about that.
That being said, Id love to see a roadrunner like frontend that runs off of Windows Automotive (aka windows vista embedded) that's something Id pay for. No need to optimize as its a self contained small OS, yet still have the capability of changing things.

But the point is that now there is no reason to run Vista. Once frontends support vista, and windows automotive is publicly available (last time I checked, the official Microsoft Version is not officially released yet) then there will be no reason not to use it. But now there is no reason to use it.

Are you saying that we could run vista for the same performance or better just by disabling the aero?

Windows Vista supports speech recognition. This should be incorporated in all future front and software. In fact, this reply was made when talking to my computer. It would be much easier to talk to my radio than to look away from the road. Personally, I love Windows Vista.
