Hello i have a garmin gps 18 that plugs into the usb port. it came with maps. now how do i get this to work on the road runner front end?

It should work if you can configure your GPS to output standard NMEA data, instead of the Garmin binary format. The specs for the unit at the Garmin website indicate that it can output both formats.

You may also have to install port splitter software (do a search for xport). This allows you to split the data from one hardware port into several virtual ports in order to feed data to several programs at the same time. I had a Garmin running through both a serial port and a serial-to-USB adapter working fine in several different programs before I got a USB powered device.

I thought he wanted the map data from the locked unit?

I did not know about the way of getting NEMA out (which is cool), but useless without GPS software. I am pretty certain Garmin locks down their software.

what external gps device do you use?
i have mapmonkey. do you use map monkey?

I'm using the Garmin 18 too. It works for both nRoute or NMEA compliant maps. Just make sure you set up the Comport correctly.

i have the garmin 18 (USB) also. Like Thefdog said, you can configure your GPS to output standard NMEA data. I am using their Spanner program to do this. Its available under their support section of their website (find garmin 18). They added it about 3 months ago. I am then able to use iGuidance with it.

Thefdog, have you had any driver issues with the USB version? I have been pluging/unpluging the unit a lot as I keep tweaking my carPC on the daily and I am constantly having issues with it in windows. Seems to lose the drivers and then Spanner will see the unit, but iGuidance cant find it. Not sure whats going on their yet, just started the troubleshooting process.

i have the GPS18 setup in my car running iGuidance. Install all the necessary drivers on your machine so Windows recognizes the device (get them from garmin's website) Once that is done you need GPSgate to split the COM ports. Then from there you configure RR for your flavor of GPS. personally, go with iGuidance. Anything else will just p1$$ you off.

BTW, you need GPSgate's fairly new version bc it detecs the Garmin GPS18. PM me for help finding the software
