im pretty sure RR isnt bias about sound cards since its your pc and media player that do the work RR just uses the functions of it.. as long as its supported on your OS you should be fine

RR is very bias when it comes to treble and bass control.. i doubt anything thats out now will work with those controls honestly.. i've never seen ANY card make use of the control

I tried to use the USB Audigy 2NX with RoadRunner. Everything works great. However when I recover from Hibernate mode, there is a problem with the sound driver reloading & the Winamp won't recover properly.
Anyone had any success with this USB SD with RR & Hibernate mode?

i'm contemplating on getting this because the output from the laptop is not loud enough. I've tried 2 different RCA Y splitters so that's not the problem. if i turn the laptop volume to 100%, then switch over to AM/FM radio on the headunit, the headunit's volume is about 25% louder. I'm trying to even it out. the only other possibility is to put some gain plugin in winamp for all the songs.

Did you try to disable the on-board sound and set usbsound=true in RR.INI ?

Yes. I've set the audio device to Audigy 2NX & set usbsound=true.
I also found out if the Audigy 2NX 5V power is "ON" all the time, RR & Winamp will work once it recovers from Hibernate. If the 5V is powered OFF & then ON when the PC recovers from Hibernate, it will mess up all the sound drivers. Attached is a screenshot of the problem :

Actually, the bass and treble work on both my desktop test machine, and on my car PC (which has on-board audio). Yes, it can be fickle, but is more of a hardware issue than a RR issue it seems.
As for the laptop not putting out enough audio, that is actually very strange. If you hook the cable to your headphone jack, and not the line out, you should get way more volume than you could ever want. I have it set up this way, and have the carpc volume set to around 30%, as putting the PC volume to any higher distorts the audio, and just control the volume with my head unit.
I prefer a real volume control personally. Also my HU has Auto volume, so if I put the windows down, the volume will increase automatically.

. Looks like I'll have to accept my current onboard sound. Unless I want to setup another carpc with 5.1 sound card?
Anyway, thanks for all the excellent contributions.
Cheers!

Are you able to recover functionality of your USB sound card after hibernation (i.e. by closing and re-opening winamp)?
