Combined Audio/Video Playlists...
When I first got into car-computing, I used Centrafuse. I've upgraded to RoadRunner (mainly due to cost, flexibility, support, etc) and am missing one feature that CF had.
I would like to be able to have combined audio and video playlists. The reason is this. I have quite a lot of music video clips. I would like to have a playlist of MP3s mixed amongs some video clips. If it is an MP3, the player would just display some sort of visualization, if a video, it would display that. RR only really supports one or the other. I understand that this is mainly because RR uses WinAmp for audio and MPC for video, but this would be an awesome feature to have.
Does anyone know of any way of implementing this in RR? or does anyone think this would be worthwhile? It was pretty cool in CF when people where in the car to be listening to some music and then have it flick over to a video clip without touching anything!

You can add .mpg .avi etc to the audio files list, and RR should both load and play them in the music section using winamp, thing is, if you want the video to display, you'd probably have to embed the video screen, which would require either a new screen to display the video embedded OR you'd have to have some buttons to toggle between the visualization or Video playback. Do note that if you're not running on your monitor's native resolution, the aspect ratio in winamp will probably be wrong (that's why RR doesn't use winamp for video).

I've been doing this for quite a while. First add your video extensions to the audio list in RR.ini. Then create an embedded app (launch) for the winamp video window. I modified my vis button so press and hold jumps to the apps screen. I still have to manually launch the app the first time, but after that its just one click away. The Winamp Video.ini is:
Code:
[GENERAL]
PATH = C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe
TryEmbeddedTimeOut = 5
WindowSearchString=!Winamp Video

You should be able to set the application to embed using this command: (without having to re-launch winamp): "RUN;;!Winamp Video" then whatever area is defined for the vis, it will display the video as well.

Problem with that method is once the winamp video embeds, you can't get rid of it without closing RR completely. My way gives the video its own separate screen that you an switch to and from whenever you want (keep in mind my primary skin is CFX-Rework).
Played with this a little more and
Code:
@LOAD;LAUNCH.SKIN;RUN;;!WINAMP VIDEO@
is a decent compromise. Now if there was someway to poll the file extension with ONSONGTART we could automate this based on the file extension.

No disrespect guino, I love RR and the impact it has had on the CarPC Front-End scene, but I'm really interested to see how EniCar goes, being MPlayer based rather than Winamp/MPC. By using MPlayer for both video and audio it should be much easier for this sort of thing to occur. And with MPlayer being the rock solid, tried and true media player from linux that will play pretty much anything you can throw at it, it should be nice and stable.
Ever considered porting RR over to MPlayer? I figured this was pretty much what they were doing with EniCar, but it would appear it's more of a 'starting from scratch with a RR base for skinning' than 'convert RR to MPlayer'. Ah well.

It's not that hard to make RR use MPlayer.. I have considered it in the past, I have looked at it, I have played with it, but that damn Slave mode just never worked for me, so I could never get anything done.. I did msg Enitalp about sharing his code for controlling mplayer so I could have a look at it but I don't think he ever sent me anything.. and since he uses C++ and I use VB6, I'd really only be able to look at it and write something similar in VB6.. all the info I have seen in regards to mplayer's slave mode was simply useless.

I've always wondered why there would be a need for two separate playlists (audio/video), especailly after starting out with an all-in-one package like Centrafuse which just has a 'Media' list, and then moving over to RR. I mean I understand *why* it happens that way and all, but just figured there should be a way to integrate them. Using MPlayer would really make this simpler. But this will also break pretty much all of the skins out there which have and Audio or Music button, and a Video button.
As a VB6/VB.NET programmer, I would be interested in having a poke around myself at the source of RR and seeing if I could port it over to MPlayer myself... where can I find the latest source files? Is 10-26-07 (from http://guino.home.insightbb.com/download.html) the latest?
Cheers,
Sam.

You wouldn't have to modify any of RR's core code as the last couple of updated modualared the player so that other players could be controled by RR w.o changing of the core code. It would end up as a player plugin dll, just like the winamp.dll and the fmod.dll player plugins.
