RoadRunner on Vista ...

I know there have been many users asking abou the possability of running RR on vista, and we all know there are certain issues with this type of setup ...

well I'd like to introduce "VirtualBox" from Sun Microsystems. It's a VM forpretty much any OS you like, and will run pretty much any OS you like. However what sets it apart from say MS VM software is ...

- support for USB and serial ports
- fully working support for sound cards
- much easier to use
- "seamless" windows, where by your VM machine can be displayed on your Host OS desktop without any window borders ...

hers is a clip of the latest RR install running TEK on an XP SP3 VM inside Vista Ultimate ... with sound, but you'll have to take my work on that one !!

and the second on is RR running in a XP SP3 VM on a VISTA machine, but in seemless mode ...

anyone wanting to run RR on vista ... check out VirtualBox from Sum ..

PS: I do not work for Sun ... lol !

Have you done any testing with hibernate or standby with this setup yet?

just some quick tests ... and the result are very good indeed.

the VM works perfectly under both hibernate and sleep/standby. by the vista pc resumes to it's pre-off state the Virtualbox is already pumping out music. and its the sames on shutdown ... the music continues to play from the VM box until almost then vista pc is off ... long after the vista screens goes blank.

so yes .. this product works perfectly with vista hibernate and sleep .. and more importanly ... RR doesnt need to be Hibernate / Stand-By aware, cause it thinks it's always running ...

yes virtual box is pretty good, have been using it for a bit to test various server operating systems. How did you get it to do seamless windows? I cant find that option anywhere.

it gets what ever you set it to get but remember your still running an OS so say if XP needs 512 to run properly you still need to give it that or it will run garbage just like standalone. The difference is that when you run the VM it grabs its share and keeps it where standalone it uses what it needs.

The emulation layer is nice but why not run it native on Vista? I'm running RR on vista x64 edition, it works fine. Takes a bit of manual configuration but it will run good, I have iG 4.0 running alongside also. This is my development workstation. I've also tried vista-lite and am very impressed, the install fits on a 700mb CD. Quick Vista! Here's how I'm lookin'

It does take some tweaking, but RR works fine on vista. No problems here.
