I am running 2006 version code. I dont update my CarPC software if there isnt need. Forcing me to every 4 months wont make me update to the new version that will force me...

Brought my carpc inside to copy a few GB's of music to it and just finished dumping my old RR setup and installed it fresh with this version. Works awesome.

i have to agree with guino, and i did see something like this coming , this is guinos work and even if we don't like it, he has the last word, how many times we all have requested new features and guino did those for us, so now is our turn, is asking for our support on this new step, personally i think is not hard at all to download the new exe, copy it to the carpc, and all this because of few people taking advantage from RR. oh well!!

This is completely unacceptable. I can't have RR suddenly fail to load when I'm in a rush to get to an appointment. The same thing happened to me with XPort right in the middle of a work day and I wanted to kill the author. I drive a lot as part of my business and rely on my carputer and my GPS.

If it is free software, and someone is selling it what's the big deal? If people are stupid enough to pay good money for something that is free, there's capitolism for you.
And since it is open source anyways, companies or people that sell it better know how to recompile it without the checking anyways. So really you are just hurting loyal people and putting in a little step to overcome for theives.
If you want to protect the file info, make the info in a seperate non-open-sourced file and obfuscate it big time so it will always say "RoadRunner by guino, open source, 100% free" or something.

well if guino has his reasons , we should just agree, maybe some construtive ideas, like a pre-warning in the splash scr (via label like the rr version) or a popup to say in 10 days need to update, what about a updater like blues rrconfig, it looks for an update and tells you so .then you can just download it and self install.
we have seen alot of changes on here in the past months , so lets not agree or disagree
but live with whats on offer and help guino out .

So after 4 months the software locks you out? I thought this thing was freeware? I have 5 friends running it that don't know there arce from a whole in the ground??? I do not like this approach. Forced upgrade is a REAL bad idea. A better approach is forced registration maybe with a serial no.? Or simply have a nag screen popup on startup after 4 months reminding you your using an old version. I can see myself driving down I-95 forget to upgrade my software and it stops working... I will be ****ed off....

Guys, as I have ALREADY said: I know this is a hassle. As soon as I have a chance, I'll come up with a better alternative other than making it stop running -- I believe a nice reminder screen should be enough.

Maybe I haven't read excatly enough, but when did start this "4-month-activation"-thing? Till this version?
And is it right that the latest opensource-sourcecode is from 11-02-07 and after this it is a "closed" project (license)?
Next question: Is it possible to develop myself, based on 11-02-07-code, and make such modified stuff public?

This is the first (and probably only) version with a time limit. The next version will likely just have a reminder screen.
The latest released sources is 11-02-07 -- correct. And no it is not a closed project as the sources are already published. New sources may be posted when/if it is deemed necessary. Anyone that wishes to contribute to the project can still do it in the same way it's been done along the years: download the latest source, mod/add/change it as needed, then send me the new files for merging. It was becoming a long task to merge new code on top of new code -- so using a well-set of defined sources (11-02-07) will allow for faster comparison and merge process.
The licensing for the 11-02-07 sources is within the main project file (modRoadRunner) -- it says (among other things) you can modify and make it public as long as you give proper credit to the original code, however, if you modify something and send me the changes, I'll be glad to merge it to the latest sources and make that public for you.

Hmm... Is this not a antilogy? On one side you say the sources are still available (however this is realized), on the other side you make some kind of "copy protection".
If I have access to the full sourcecode, I could easiely remove the protection and compile it again.
And if you say, it's allowed to me to make some version public (with the conditions in modRoadrunner listed)........you know that I mean.
To make it more clear. I haven't the intention to do a "hack" of the version, but in the past I have published some special-modified versions of rr.
For example. I use for me and some friends a special version of rr with "audiogenie.dll", cause there it is possibility to readout the covers from TAGID directly (and much more features). If offered you (1 or 2 years ago) this version, but you don't want to implement this cause of the used dll.... No problem for me, I created my own version.
For now I have not access to the fully code (as I think), so it will be much more work to implement your published "parts" of the code.
But I will see....

guys..it is his work..words like "unacceptable" are unacceptable
he has not implemented any copy protection method.. just a precaution which he promised he will remove in the next version..
this hobby is getting more an more popular.. and many many people are trying to make money out of it..this has to be prevented.

Here's the bottom line, if you don't want the 4-month lockout, don't upgrade. Plain and simple solution.
Edit: Just don't complain when things don't work right.
