Thumbs up iPhone Goodness.... With Ride Runner

Ok, I just ran across a cool little app, and thought I would share

Its called iAmp Remote. It allows you to control Winamp with your iPhone wireless. I just tested it here, and it is pretty slick

It took me all of 30 seconds to set it up. Install the app on the phone, download and run the Winamp Plugin installer, then enter your PC's IP address in the settings on the iPhone. Thats it!

First I created a playlist with every song in my collection. With that loaded in RR, you can then use the iPhone app to play the songs. Skip forward / back ect. The bonus is, you can then search that playlist from the phone! On the phone I type "poker face" and the results show up instantly, tap the song and it starts playing in RR! The screen in RR updates with the name of the song. This works in reverse as well, you can change the song in RR and see the song change instantly in the iPhone.

You can also control the volume, ballance and such from the phone as well.

Couple of uses:

- This little app could be handy to pass the phone to the backseat, and let someone browse through and play music.

- Operate the music remotely at a car show

- Impress everyone at your next CarPC meet

- In my case, I am using it in the car, as well as going to use it here at home with my Home Automation install. I can sit on the couch and browse through and play music over the stereo system.

One major drawback is you can not create playlists from the iPhone itself.

Ok so how do we make an iPhone App that actually controls RR? Now that would be something special...

There is a Remote Desktop (and a VNC) client for the iPhone -- could use that to directly control RR.

If I knew how they programmed the iPhone Apps, it would be dead easy.

I already have a concept of theory plugin which allows me to control RR on one PC from RR on another.

John, how do you connect to the car PC? I have no wireless router in my car, only a USB WIFI Dongle. I can connect to my home network in the car, but when I use the IP Adress from my dongle it wont work. My Local Area Network is unpluged, so windows says.

You will need to wifi "cards"
Either it be an internal nic or usb dongle
One will be in in ad-hoc mode, the other in infrastructure mode
Ad-hoc you will use to connect the iphone/ipod touch directly to the pc
The infrastructure mode you'll connect to regular access points, so u can surf the web

Another option is to install a wifi router in your car :-)

I am gonna try this out tonight
Will steal my sisters usb dongle and give this a shot
I'm super excited about this "feature"
Now time to look for winamp skins I can use in my car :-)

The bluetooth stack on the Blackberrys has supported Audio/Video Remote Control Protocol (AVRCP) and A2DP for years. Your Blackberry already does this.

I have a cheap wireless router I picked up when I was in China. I got it to hook up multiple laptops to the hotels Internet, and now am just gonna use in the car. You can get one under $15 these days. They work great at CarPC meets as well as you can share audio and video dll's and such

Yea, I have VNC on the iPhone as well, but it is a pain, as it will not lock the remote 800 x 600 display on the iPhone display, and have to scroll around ect.

Yes it will work with the ipod Touch
I have it running on my network @ home.

Its a preety straigh-forward app. Works wonderfully.

The app does freeze up for a few seconds every once in a while.
But it is bearable

One caveat: the app isn't peristant.
Meaning if the screen turns off, "times-out", the apps closes
You have to re-open it.

I have gotten around that slight issue by running "backgrounder" on my jailbroken iTouch.
