ONLINE tag picking up firewire as network?
On my test system, which isn't installed in the car yet, I have the onboard ethernet (EPIA MII-12000) and no other networking adapters... I'm using the ONLINE tag in the skin I'm working on, and it seems to be picking up the firewire port as a network, since the ONLINE tag is showing active. I have no cable hooked up to the onboard ethernet, so I'm thinking the only thing it could be detecting is the firewire, which often shows up as a network of its own...
Anyone else experience this?

try disabling firewire if you don't use it through device Manager. I disable the 1393 controller on my MII and it works a treat, boots slightly quicker as well.

I just bought a Firewire/USB enclosure for my slot load DVD optical device
and was hoping to use up the firewire port with this device... I know it's a touch slower than 2.0, but....
I can't get it to recognize the 1394 device on my MII 1200 EPIA board...
the port is enabled in the BIOS, and I also tried disablng the network attachment it normally has... The drive works fine on USB 2.0 connection,
and I'll go that way if I have to, but I'd really like to use the 1394 port... is this port only for networking on this motherboard??? THe only drivers the EFUS enclosure came with were some Win98SE drivers on a floppy...
thanks

This might not have anything to do with it, but it's possible that the firewire port on the MII12000 is not bus-powered, and that the firewire device requires its own power supply. Does the enclosure have its own power supply? If not, can you try it on a standard desktop machine and see if it's recognized there? You might want to research the MII12000 and see if the firewire port is self-powered or if it requires devices that have their own power supply...
But as I said, I don't know if the firewire port is bus powered or not, so that might not be the issue at all, but it's something to look into.

thanks black- yes I do have external power to the enclosure, a 5 volt lead off of my opus, which also supplements my USB 2.0 hub power. Everything works great USB, but I'd still like to utilize the firewire if possible... the EPIA only seems to recognize the port as a networking port... But you are right in that I should try
the enclosure hooked up to a desktop firewire port..... just need to make a new AC/DC power supply as I hacked the cable
thanks much

Okay, then the next things to try would be to connect a different firewire device (if you have one, or borrow one for a couple hours) to the MII12000 and see if it is recognized.
Also, try reinstalling the firewire drivers for the motherboard and see if that makes any difference. You should be able to download them off the epia website.
Also, you mentioned the device only came with 98se drivers, which I suspect could be the root of the problem. Try contacting the company for drivers for your particular OS, or scour their website for drivers.

thnx black-
I will try another firewire device and see what happens...
Also, I think it only came with a windows SE floppy cause WinXP already has built in support for this connection and shouldn't need 3rd party drivers...
but I will look on the VIA web site to see if there is new firewire drivers, although I think I already checked that... thanks again for your help
