Help getting started

Can some of you skinners give a guy a good starting place to look for information on the basics of skinning. I know the preferred tool is to use Photoshop. Do you start with a basic template, and then use layers??? Is there a simple guide... or is it just a shut up, get off your *** and learn just like we did situation???

A friend of mine taught me how to fly fish... his exact words were

"I can teach you how to fly fish in 10 minutes... but it's going to take you the rest of your life to get good at it." While I found this to be an exaggeration, there is some of truth to it. Can the same be said for skinning... if so...what's the 10 minute part???

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.... likewise for scorn and ridicule!

umm... I'm still messing around with Photoshop... I know the functions but it's how you use them that make the good stuff... I believe using layers for everything is the best approach for modifying and making the down/up/hover screens.. but then I haven't really made a full skin from scratch yet..

The secret is working with layers.. (photoshop)
Make a basic layout and use it for all the screens. The RRskineditor works very simple. try for "tutorials photoshop"

Yeah... I've been working on the Brushmetal skin lately, but I am hoping to get the main menu PSDs before I have to edit them myself.. I'll be editing most of them to include a bunch of the features never added to the skin.. afterwards I intend to make the same skin on a "aluminum" version for better readability on day time..
