Thanks for reading

If you cant get the G4 to be 100% flush, why not bring the dash out a bit? Have a fabricator do it so it can look OEM.

It's been a few weeks, have you figured out your glitch? Things seem to work fine for me, so I'm not sure if it is your configuration or installation. Would love to hear back.

Lightbulb One Year Later...

After a smooth trouble free year after my first ever carputer install I had to crack the dash open again for something relatively unrelated and decided that while I was in there I would go ahead and look into finally finishing this project. And since my free year of OnStar was up, I no longer needed to leave all the hardware intact for them. Which means I am free to utilize my factor onstar hardware. After hours of scouring the web trying to answer:
  1. What type of connector does my G4 GPS antenna use
  2. What type of connector does my onstar GPS antenna use to connect to the VIU
  3. What gender are the two connectors
  4. What is the correct power needs of the G4 GPS antenna and OnStar antenna
  5. What type of cable would I need
  6. Where in the world can I find one without spending $50
I finally came to the conclusion they both are MCX 3v (3-5v for the G4, according to the magnetic side of the antenna)
So all I needed was a short male MCX to male MCX, found these and ordered one today.

I ordered the first one for $12+shipping from cableorganizer.com out of FL and I'll give it a shot when it comes in. For such a small order, their customer service was off the hook walking me through my best option and finding me the shortest (READ:cheapest) cable for my install. I hope it works, time will tell. I'll post and update including GPS status change switching from one to the other (not expecting one, but can't hurt to look) after the cable arrives and gets installed.

Cable arrived this morning, got it installed tonight and it wokrs great! GPS reception has even improved, which I had hoped for. I wanted to patch into the factory/OnStar antenna for two basic reasons, 1). I didn't want that little puck antenna sitting on my dashboard 2). dozens of people told me that it couldn't be done. The fact that the signal is stronger is just icing on the cake. Now that I am running Mappoint 2009 (database and updated maps, still using the Mappoint 2006 that came with SD) I think I can finally say this install is 100% done...until I think of something else to improve it with.
