Was the truck totaled when you got it?

it was close & I coulda had it totalled, but then I wouldn't want to buy it cause it woulda been a salvage title, by being just under totalled I was able to get the customer a big check for like 70% of the value, then buy the rest of the truck making up the 30% on my end. minus his deductable of course

this bezel is wearing me out, weld, sand repeat, weld sand repeat. it's almost done, when the basic sanding is done I work over all the edges & corners with a tiny file... I sit there filing for hours while my kids playing wrestling on xbox... when it's all good enough I move up from 80 grit to a 180, then a 320, then several coats of a trim black paint. this paint is nice, it drys almost like a rubbery plastic & fills well, great adheasion to the plastic & a real dull sheen, kinda like factory.

when this drys good tommorow I'll sand out any remaining imperfections & repaint it again, repeat this procedure till it's flawless... then, it's done. if I decide to add any texture it could be done at this point.

so this piece has no fillers of any kind, not even primer, just plastic & paint, it'll be real durable & not likely to develop any cracks or blemishes in use, good as new

I like the plastic welding, I have the option to get my plastic welding ticket on my last year of college for industry welding. It does look interesting, I might play around with it. The dash looks Wicked!

I found this thread after finishing reading your caddy thread.

All I can say..

I hate you......

In the totally complimentary, jealous, and wish I could do work that good, way though.

It's stuff like this that makes me wonder if my install is good enough. *sigh*

Very very very nice. Can't say it enough.

So totally jealous.

Now if only it was an FX45..

ahh, but there are so many more mods available for the 35, both turbo & supercharged & in the end a built 35 will beat a 45 any day it's like when lexus did the sc300 & 400, the 300 was much better with a turbo, which you couldn't do to the 400

this 3.5 v6 is a pretty stout engine, it's the same as a 350z... plus, I had no choice, none of my customers nearly totaled there fx 45 that week

my back is out, I can't finish this bezel for another day or 2... pain... sucks....

*nod* true enough. I just had to try to poke some fun.

I wasn't aware that the aftermarket made the 3.5 more desirable, but it does make sense, particularly since it's the same motor as the 350z.

Either way, for most mortals I think either motor is probably ample.

I really REALLY want to swap a diesel motor into my Explorer. When/if the motors start coming out for the 1/2 ton trucks from the "Big 3" I may have a fighting chance to adapt one to my application. The "hard part" will be getting all the electronics right.

I particularly like the 4.5L Duramax that GM has announced. It's claimed to be "the same size" as an LS motor, so I should have no problem fitting it.

Anywho, that was totally off topic! Forgive my rambling!

Bummer about your back. Get some rest, so you can get back to the bezel and make me even more jealous.

not flawless yet, but getting there...

that paint in the first painted shot is a sem trim black, it dries not completely flat, but a low sheen, I like to polish it & then it has just a bit more shine, but still low to medium gloss

this bezel just has way to much fabrication & welding to be able to get a flawless finish without at least some primer, thought I could just fill with the trim paint, but by the second aplication I saw it just wasn't gonna happen, so I primed & blocked it, the I used a black laquer that I have, it has a bit more body than the trim paint, I could then wetsand it & trim paint it for a flawless finish, or I could spray some texture on it, then spray it with the trim paint, or... I could just polish the black laquer... that's really a nice look, it's shiny but not as much as a clearcoated piece... it's maybe 75% gloss...

if I did this I would then do the center console & door trim all to match, black laquer trim through out might look cool...

still havent decided 100% on the finish, but I still have to work out the vents & ductwork before final finish anyway...

this is so far..., the laquer was sprayed with a few heavy coats to allow wetsanding, so it has a heavy peel effect, this would go to smooth as glass when polished though...

If you're going to paint some of the interior pieces, it would be cool to do it in the same paint as the exterior. I love that exterior paint, still drooling over it even after a few days!

I thought about that but it might look like too much, might look cheap, most times I see interior stuff painted to match the outside it just has a cheap look to it, I think just black laquer would look more classy...

you're right, sometimes that looks cheap.

have you ever seen flat black covered with high gloss clear?
I think if you get the right flat black it looks amazing, when light shines on it, it's a glossy black, otherwise the flat shows through. It's hard to describe it though.

For you, I think the laquer black would be awesome, if you do it right. Paint just the right pieces, and have restraint to not paint the wrong ones. Too many times someone gets a can of interior paint, and just takes apart as much of the dash pieces as possible and starts spraying them without thinking of the final product.

Of course you will get it right, just warning those subscribed here about it...

Ah turbo, your installs never cease to amaze. So I take it the driverrack unit will be making it's way into this car instead?

I've been thinking about that very thing past few days, I'm hesitant to say "yes, it's going in"... I've been so wrapped up in the dash & body of this car that I haven't really measured anything really. I'm considering the audio at this point.

for me to do "my system" I really want 8"s in the doors, & I really want my horns under the dash... this is the only vehicle I've ever bought that I didn't confirm this fitment before I bought it..., broke my own rule for this fx

If I can't fit my big stuff for my front end then I don't know what I'll do... I haven't really looked at components in years, & I think the only way way I'd get enough bass up front is with a 3 way if I can't fit my 8"s & horns. I hate 3 ways but might do it if I have no choice... I don't think I'd be happy with just a 6 1/2 component set... maybe with a sub in the center console???

I haven't even lifted the tire cover in the trunk yet, but this thing is much smaller than what I'm used too... I may have to keep this system small & efficent, but I can't stand a wimpy system, I like a lot of spl & clean & accurate,

at this point I'm not sure what I can do system wise,if I can't go all out then I may not bother doing the driverack in here, just want to get the dash togeather & get plates on it..., haven't even driven it yet even, I'm guessing I'm gonna fall even more in love with it & then have to go off with the system, but we'll see
