Big Update

My dad came to town, loved my carputer, specially RoadRunner running GoogleEarth (GoogleEarth Plugin).

He convinced me to ditch the suspended computer case in the trunk and conceived the idea of the drawer you see on the pictures below. Without his help, I couldn't have made it!

It's hang on the trunk by only four screws, it's simpler and it's even easier to mount than my setup, which required 8 screws.

Two buttons, for the power and reset buttons. On the other side, the pin to stop the drawer from opening.

More on the drawer itself: After white prime, just black paint. After that, carpet, I think. Haven't found it yet, tried HomeDepot, not. Tried on one body shop: they won't sell theirs. Still looking.

Although it's much wider, it's it's less than half the height of the computer case it replaces. It's also much easier to maintain, upgrade and check for cables and connections. It's also much, much cooler: the aluminum case would get hot all by itself on hot days, not so with a wood case: as my dad puts it, the fans would have to work first to cool the case, than to cool the computer: it's a tall order for a couple of 12cm fans!

RipplingHurst, just a general question. Rather sending a computer signal to the stock LCD, have you considered using a replacement LCD that accepts more standard voltages in place of the stock LCD? Then the the challenge would be changing the voltate/signal that the car sends rather than changing what a computer sends.

It's a good question. I've seen only big CRT arcade monitors that could accept those high voltages. A 7" LCD? Couldn't find any. Also it would be a challenge to find any LCD that could accept anything other than VGA or S-Video or Composite. RGBs is not common in the retail market. I would still need a converter. Somebody must try that route with a converter, not with a monitor. I tried a vga to to RGBs converter, somebody could try and find a RGBs to VGA converter, and see what can be done.

Yes, i like the drawer. i think i want to do something like that for my ride. though i have a mac mini, i want to take it off the floor. I have a bad reputation for keeping my car cleaning products in my trunk, every now and then one spills.. I dont think the mac mini would like the taste of rain-x. I like what they did with the genesis at SEMA

Keep up the good work~!

This car is sold! Family grew, bought a new 08 Sequoia Platinum.

Thanks all for the comments, you've been very helpful.

For now I'm off to mod my 07 Infiniti FX35 here.

Cheers,

RH.
