First Car PC, going into a 96 Chevy Tahoe

EDIT: 99 Chevy Tahoe*

I've been looking into building one for some time, and have come up with a complete solution for about $1,600. Let me know what you guys think, and let me know what you'd (if any thing) do differently. Thanks

The PC build:
Case:VoomPC-2 Link $79.95
Power supply: M2-ATX Link $69.99
Motherboard: Intel BOXDG45FC Link $114.99
Processor: Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz Link $83.99
Ram: GeIL Black Dragon 2GB Link $28.49
HDD: Western Digital WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM Link $79.99
Base Price for the PC: $457.40

Other Hardware

Screen/Interface: Xenarc MDT-X7000 Link $699.00

HD-Radio: Visteon HDZ300 Link, HDR-RS232 Link, USB RS232 FTDI Adapter Link $163.23

Navigation: BU-353 Link $37.55

Satellite Radio: Sirius SC-C1 Link, MJS SC-C1 USB Link $114.99

ODB-II Stats: ODB-II USB Reader Link $39.95

Software: StreetDeck 2 W/ Navigation Link $99.00

Final Build: $1,611.12

Thats pretty close to a lot of the high end decks. I haven't decided on a rear view cam yet. For internet access I plan to share my phones 3g connection (simple usb sync cable). I also plan to install a wireless dongle in the car pc to share that connection over wifi. Thus anybody with a laptop can get online while we're traveling.

I have a lot in store for the AV system, but that gives you a basic idea for the head unit. Please feel free to comment and make suggestions about the build.

Edit: I forgot to ask about bluetooth, what dongles does Streetdeck support for hands free calling?

Thanks,
Wayne

I've got a Samsung Blackjack. Aside from running windows mobile (not a huge fan, but hey its a smartphone ) its a great phone. Soon as my contract is up for renewal I will be getting an Iphone 3G S I just don't feel like dropping $700 on a phone. :-P

looks like you have doone your research!

so far it looks good, the biggest issue i think you might face would be the m2 (plagued with interferance noise, and anti thump amp turn-on not working), and the motorized screen(flip up, vga screens in general, don't seem to last all that long ), but i have no suggestions that would be in the same price range or budget, so take this as a warning.

no dont do that. what you have is perfect for carpc's. what you want is wmwifirouter. http://www.wmwifirouter.com/

with that, you can turn your phone into an ad-hoc network (so any laptop sees your cellphone just like any home network. you dont need anything else) and the usb wired mode is awesome too, just plug it in, the computer will automatically setup a usb network and gets online... even if you restart the pc it just gets back online. i leave my phone out in my truck and use VNC to remote control my truckpc from my couch. its perfect for running updates and doing all the mundane stuff you dont want to do while in your car. i did have to pay $30 for it, and that is hard to swallow... but for something i have used nearly everyday its a no brainer.

what even more cool is when i go to a friends house, and they say "yeah i got a laptop but we dont have internet". i just say "yeah you do" and within a minute they are online.

Only thing about that is, I don't think the blackjack has wifi, the blackjack II may but not the first one... :-/

Sorry don't mean to Hijack,,,,,,,
Hey Trader,
Does it use minutes?
Do you need a data package?

I have a Treo 700W and messed around with PDA net a little.

Thanks,

i bought pdanet too thinking it was awesome... but a few days later i found wmwifirouter and became ****ed off i was ripped off by pdanet. wmwifirouter is a stellar piece of mobile software, very VERY well put together.

i have an unlimited data plan, on the old $30 sero package. sprint now has the 'everything' plan you can get for $60 if you know how... the package i have has long been expired.

if your phone runs windows mobile and has wifi it should work. on my treo800w, it works too good honestly... just open the program, click one of the big buttons for connectivity, and its ready for any wifi device to connect within about 20sec. and like i said, in my car, i just plug in the usb cord and instantly im online since that keeps the phone charged while surfing... its as good as it possibly could be imo.

and in case youre wondering, i dont notice any difference in speed when i use the usb cord or wifi mode... the only reason i use usb mode is just to keep the phone charged and to keep the connection more secure (although, you certainly can run it in wifi mode when its plugged in and charging)

Thanks,

In order to access the internet from your phone, you need a data plan. By default (without a plan) you pay per KB download... With AT&T it's $30/month for unlimited data(unlimited web access). Although according to AT&T's Terms of Service, if you want to use your phone as a gateway to the internet(tethering), you are suppose to buy an additional tethering plan from them. However, as long as you don't download huge files, or torrent you should be fine without buying one(they won't notice).

Hope that helps ;-)

My 700W has no problem connecting via my SD WIFI card so it sounds like it will work for, Thanks.
