mp3 to car stereo cable

I have followed "Moonshiner's" advice and made a cable using mp3 headphone jack, soldered it to 4 (26 gauge) individual speaker wires, then inserted them into the back of my Pioneer car stereo. I followed the pinout suggested by Moonshiner, and had R+, R-, L+ and L-. I used 26 gauge butt splices, crimped them to the wire ends and then inserted them onto the individual pins sticking out from the blue plug on the back of the car stereo. They fit snuggly, with some effort. When I turn on the mp3 player (Sansa) and select 'CD' from my stereo, I can NOT get the device to play through the car stereo CD channel.
Did I do something wrong, is it possible to do what I am attempting? I was excited to avoid all the gadgets to make my mp3 player work.
Thank you.

Today is your lucky day!

I just did the exact same project on my F-100 but I was adding a full computer to the truck lol.

Turn the radio off and hold down the function key. Once the functions come on you can scroll through using the channel selector and find where it says Aux off, turn it on. Turn the radio on and select Aux turn on your Mp3 player and play away!
