1996 Camaro

After quite a few incarnations of a mobile system this is what I have now. The first 4 or 5 times the system was incredibly ugly and in the way (but functional). I guess now I kinda dig the 'stealth' look. My screen is in-dash (although Sony could have picked a better color for their hardware other than silver). The PC is in the glovebox. When the glovebox is closed, there's no way to see the computer anywhere in the car. I wish I still had some pics I could find of my system from 4 years ago. It stuck out in my car like a sore thumb.

...anyway...

Hardware:
- Sony XAV-7W Head Unit
- Sony XM-2150GSX Amp
- Sony XS-L1036 10" Subs (X2)
- Pioneer TS-A1661 6.5" 3-Ways (X4)
- Blaupunkt DVD-ME1
- EPIA 800MHz CPU
- 256MB SDRAM
- 40GB HDD
- X10 MouseRemote

Here are some pics of my current system:

Looking good...now all you need is a plexi cover for the glove box with a little cold cathode in there...

Acutally, I thought about that. I was going to put plexi over the top and cut out a hole in the back of the glove box for an 80mm lighted case fan. I have 2 of them lying around from my last setup.

OK....is it just something messed up on my laptop or did all my pics I posted in this thread disappear? I'll post some smaller ones. Otherwise you can see all the pics at the url listed in my signature.

UPDATED - Posted new pics from a different server

Thanks, whateverjames.

I liked it a little better when the enclosure held my old subs and computer with the lighted fans and plexi top, but I didn't really have a decent place to put my amp and I found that when I turned the volume up the subs would make the HDD skip.

Thanks.

The Blaupunkt unit is just sitting on the floor behind and kinda under the passenger seat and facing the driver's side. It's out of the way enough to not be seen unless your looking for it and close enough so I can reach it while I'm driving. It's not the best place to have it, but the Blaupunkt is only a temporary thing. I'll be getting rid of it as soon as I can find a notebook DVD drive that I like.

Got some new parts today:

New power supply

New remote

New DVD Drive (replacement for iMac)

Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to get everything installed.

how do you find the video quality with this head unit. I assume you connect to the dvd player with a composite. I still have to trouble shoot mine, as I finished the primary install at 1 am, but am sure mine isnt quite right.

John,
The remote is a presentation device I got from targus. It's a little bigger than the picture made it seem, but it's smaller than my X10 remote, it's RF, and it works pretty well. I miss the programmable buttons though. I ordered it directly from Targus. It was about $50.00.

Here is a link to it.

Chronic13,
It's not VGA so it's not perfect, but I think the video quality is pretty good. The HU actually comes with another little box that has all the aux A/V inputs and then a single cable runs from that box to the HU. That second little box only allows for composite input. There's a picture of the second box on my cardomain page.
I'm actually having some issues with static on the screen right now, but that's a result of power and grounding of the PC and not anything to do with the screen. When I plug the PC into an extension cord running from my house, the static disappears and the screen is crystal clear. The static is only there when the PC is running off the car's power.
I'd really like a screen with VGA input, but I'd rather have the clean look of a screen that retracts into the dash when it's not in use. And it's still pretty cool to see the screen pop out of the dash on it's own.

bgoodman,
I got the PSU from idot.com. They have a pretty decent section of mini-itx hardware.
Here's a link to the PSU.
