off topic, but "jalli", being 16 and have a bmw, how are you tight on money, did you spend all your paycheck on you car payment, jsut wondering, what happens if **** happens to you car and you have to change a part or get some work done,

now on topic,
if money is tight i would recommend to save up and then start the project, because it can get expensive, and in a bmw, i am pretty sure you want to do it right the first time, and get some good parts to build it, just my 2cents

I got the car b/c my dad sells cars and we were able to get a REALLY good price on it( good friends with local BMW dealership). He regards money spent by me on my "crazy projects" as "wasted". By the way, its 2003 so I have the warranty.

how did you extend the power cable (4-wire atx power cable y/b/b/r). What gauge are the wires ? Do you run all the cables (vga+usb+audio+power) in a single bulk? or did you route power and the others seperately?

If anyone cares, the radio in Strahleman's car look like the module above the radio in the old 7 series ( tape player, equalizer etc.), If so and It uses the same contols it must be a NIGHTMARE to operate ( or maybe I never learned how to use mine right) . The display is probably better than the one BMW sticks us with though...

i recently found this forum while searching for other that have done this to a bmw... thought i'd throw a few cents.

smg: yoiu asked if you could put the screen elsewhere so you could still have your factory radio. i suggest that you put the screen where everyone else has and do as i did. i started out with lowering the HVAC to below the screen and put the radio in my glove compartment... but that turned out to be just a huge pain in the *** to change modes. from sirius/dash cd/ phat box/ aux (computer) not to mention i could no longer see the display for my bluetooth. so i put the radio where the HVAC should go and have the HVAC where the cupholders are. i just bought another set of HVAC so i could take it apart and build my own console for the center... i'm sure some won't care for that set up but it's nice to have the computer screen and the radio on the dash.

Where the cupholders are? How did you get it in there? Is it easy for you to use it like that?

yes the center console... i actually got the idea from someone else here is the pic i found that gave me the idea... i recently bought another HVAC controller which i am now taking apart to build my own console. this way the buttons will be horizontal to my fingers instead of vertical. coming along nicely so far. i am hoping to be done with the whole project this weekend or next and i'll get some great pics up here.

Ehrm, how did you get the radio to fit where the HVAC is in the stock car? there is not enough room behind the lower half of that space to fit a slide out LCD screen or radio!.. Still, the HVAC looks pretty neat in the center console, but I don't really understand what all you could put in two shallow bays to need that kind of thing...

gork: i have a xenarc touchsreen where the radio & HVAC controls were and lowered the radio to where you would normally put the HVAC if you had the nav. system. yes there was some plastic that had to be removed from behind but it took 15 mins. here is a pic of the mold i got. but in this picture imagine the bmw business radio where the HVAC contols are... i had to do this so i could get to the "mode" button to control sirius/phatbox/radio/cd player as well as being able to to see who is calling on the display via bluetooth. this is a pic i got off the guy i bought it from. once again imagine the radio where the HVAC is.

Wow; I had no idea the radio could fit there. The HVAC controls barely fit there in my car! Maybe the M3 has less space there than the regular E46, though. That would not be suprising....

If you have a chance to take a pic of the inside of your dash when you next work on it, I'd be very interested to see the fitment..

gork: i did the same thing to my buddies ///3 his is a 2004 just did it this past weekend. it will definitly work. does take a little modding but looks great. i'll get some pics up for ya of the M3. asap

great install. i have recently started my own project in my e39. i was planning on installing the CarX software that works directly with the steering wheel buttons in the car but that software requires the TV module for the BMW. In your setup, do you have the module or did you bypass it?

Hey, What exactly is back there? What do you have to cut to get the radio to fit?

I'd like to start working on a custom menu. I'm an interface junkie, so my plans are to support a PowerMate, touch screen, and steering wheel controls, with the option of Bluetooth later (I've used my T610 as an expensive remote control for my Mac and its a nice touch). Most of all, I want to make a snazzy *looking* interface - probably a radial menu, since it allows for good "up/down" control (think Price is Right), and maps well onto a rotary input. Have you started on this at all? I suspect it would be a lot more effective to pool efforts.

Also - sub 5 sec boot times? I must know more.
